Blowing in the Wind 2057.5: Hurricanes Win Eight of Last Nine, Earn Playoff Spot

Post by aaronweiner » Tue Jan 16, 2024 10:08 am

The Jacksonville Hurricanes ended the regular season with a cannon shot: Daniel Pepper's 25th home run of the season, a walkoff against the Charm City Jimmies. It completed a three-game sweep of Charm City, and was their eighth win in nine games. Tied going into the last two weeks of the season for the final wild card, Jacksonville made a statement by taking down Charm City at full power. Is it too much to suggest that Jacksonville is a quietly dangerous team in the playoffs?

"Absolutely not," said Pepper. "The stadium was rocking in the last game of the year. Charm City sent their A team to go knock us out, and that makes sense - we just swept them. They should be a little afraid."

Before the Hurricanes can take on the Jimmies again, they will have to get past Montreal. Jacksonville showed up against the 100-win Blazers this month, winning two out of four in a road series, the other two losses one-run games. They'll have to do it again - they show up as underdogs to home favorite and top wild card Montreal.

"The numbers don't lie - we were about equal during the regular season," said cleanup hitter Donald Miller. "This is a more even series than anyone suspects."

Jacksonville was fortunate that just 87 wins got them into the show this year, but there's a history of Jacksonville coming out of this sort of season and winning championships. The Hurricanes have three Landises, and two of them were from 87-win teams. This year's team had one of the best pitching staffs in the BBA, and with their arms and their veteran hitting, there's a real chance that they could make some noise in the playoffs.

"Age is nothing," said Pepper. "Experience is everything. We're ready, willing, and able, and we can't wait to give it one more shot at the 'ship."

Wow. Jax began the month slow but is now riding a hot streak. This team may have peaked at the right time.

I really wonder if there is code written into the game for streaks. I worry because Nashville played like shit in September.
