Blowing in the Wind 2055.2: Jacksonville Upgrades Pitching Staff

How do you turn a bad pitching staff into a good one? Not surprising: gobs of money helps. The Jacksonville Hurricanes re-signed #2 starter Mark Thomas this offseason to a potential five year deal, and then made him the #4 starter, signing former Chicago, Boise, and Rocky Mountain ace Bernie Stuart and former #1 overall Gerald Sizemore to separate six year deals to move the Jacksonville staff back into potentially not just respectability, but potentially a solid BBA pitching staff.

"We think this might be the best Jacksonville pitching staff since Stephen Best and Peter Dean were in their prime," said Hurricanes GM Aaron Weiner. "One through four, it might be better than that."

Neither Sizemore nor Stuart is quite as good a starter as Weiner's last big splash pitcher signing, Alaric Wullenweber, signed when Weiner was running Des Moines. However, the two of them combined earn roughly what Wullenweber earned per year in free agency, both are former staff aces, and with a combined 21 WAR over the last three seasons the pair should help to stabilize the Jacksonville rotation behind reigning Steve Nebraska winner Bob Anderson.

"Bob proved that he's maybe not just the best young pitcher in the BBA last year, but maybe the best pitcher, period," Weiner said. "We'd be crazy to not get him some help, and we feel like we've gotten him a ton of help."

Stuart has had three seasons in which he has placed in the top three in Steve Nebraska voting, and Sizemore has been a rock-solid #2 starter since 2051, mostly with Las Vegas.

"Now we just need more hitting," Weiner said. "We have feelers out there: let's see who signs with us."
