Blowing in the Wind 2054.2: Jacksonville Likely to Make Moves in the Coming Days (partially serves as a trade block)

Post by aaronweiner » Thu Feb 09, 2023 11:13 am

Unlike many of the teams Aaron Weiner has taken over, the Jacksonville Hurricanes are in perfectly solid financial shape, with very few long-term contracts and a lot of flexibility. The team will have close to $40 million in cap space this offseason, and if as expected they re-sign none or few of their 2054 free agents, they will have close to $70 million to maneuver in 2054. However, the team has a number of appealing expiring deals, and is likely to make moves in the coming weeks.

"We have a lot of guys that could help other teams," Weiner said. "We're waiting for some of the dust to settle first, but there are a lot of solid players on this team."

Jacksonville is expected to have to eat the contract of Peter Dean, but fellow high priced veterans like outfielders Norihisa Yokoyama and Sawyer Slizz are likely to be dangled in upcoming trade talks. Both are still solid major leaguers and could help some ballclubs.

"Yokoyama and Slizz are both in their 30s and are not part of our future plans, and they both know this, but if they're on the ballclub in April they're gonna play," said Weiner. "They both had solid years last year. We're probably going to have to retain some salary to move either, but they're expiring deals and won't hurt either team long term, so that's okay."

The Hurricanes are also likely to offer up players like Edgar Sosa, Jude Stephens, and Spencer Hillson, all key components of the 83-win Jacksonville team last year. Stephens specifically is coming off a career year, and Hillson has looked very good in two stops in his last two years. Solid starter Luis Rubio might also be moved.

"We like a lot of the components of this team, but we also need to make a few changes," Weiner said. "There has to be a little bit of improvement in some areas."

When asked whether Jacksonville would consider trading such standouts as Dane Licht or such young budding stars as Bob Anderson, Weiner refused to rule it out.

"We'd consider dealing anyone on the merits as long as it will help the franchise, but, obviously, some of our central stars will be harder to move," Weiner said. "Dane is obviously a star hitter in his prime, and we don't have enough financial issues that it's an imperative to move him. Bob has come a long way since I drafted him for Des Moines, and it would probably take a serious offer for us to discuss him."

At the very least, the Hurricanes sound like they'll be busy this offseason.

"We're hoping for some offers on some of these guys, but we will probably approach some teams as well," Weiner said. "We have a lot to offer."
