18-Aug-52: Jacksonville Forecast #6: Roster Shakeup As Playoff Hopes Dim

Jacksonville made a few notable roster moves today. While JAX has largely been conservative in its approach to roster management as the team achieved modest success, a recent slide down to 3 games over .500, 2 games out of the wild card and 9 games out of the divison lead, has led GM Dan Rigatoni to take some more aggressive moves as the Brewster prepares for its final act of the season.

With the trade deadline a week away, JAX has mulled over a few different moves. Reported discussions failed to materialize, and while fans grew impatient as the team seemingly sat on its hands with its playoff window closing, Rigatoni himself hasn't been afraid to vocalize his frustration.

"Watching a lead dwindle away is never fun. Not for staff, players, or fans. While we've evaluated a few different trades for roster upgrades, we also didn't want to mortgage our future. It's a difficult balance, and right now I'd like to take a 'wait and see' approach before trading away prospects for upgrades at the major league level."

Well, the wait and see approach has moved into the "see" phase, as with the trade deadline a week away, JAX made a few noteworthy roster moves.

SP Bob Anderson, an arrival from the Best/Barkin trade earlier in the season, came back from UCL surgery earlier this season and posted a 1.46 ERA over 49 1/3 innings. He's being kept on a low pitch count as he builds up strength post-surgery, but he seems to be showing signs of a full recover. Given the team's situation, Anderson should benefit from getting reps at the major league level, while also likely being one of the best options to upgrade Jackonsville's rotation, which has fielded over 10 different starting pitchers this year. RP Gary Bryan was sent back down to AAA. While looking good in a short stint, he was the only reliever that could be sent back to AAA without passing through waivers. SP Javier Gallegos moves to the bullpen after a weak showing in 7 starts (. Locker room reports indicate he's a good presence, which may be what the team needs during a turbulent period.

In the lineup, JAX called up Anderson's former Kernel, LF Pedro Hozven. Hozven's torn the cover off the ball in AA this year, posting 4.2 WAR and a .326/.401/.528 slash line. While his glove work and base running are subpar, the bat has shown up as superb. He'll likely be splitting time in JAX's crowded outfield and in the DH slot. IF Carlos Correa also gets his first call-up of the year to fill in for the injured 2B Ka'im Muntasir.

Jacksonville's largely been treading water after building a nice cushion with a 16-10 April, floating around .500 in each of the months that followed. The team's largely outperformed expectations, but there's been some regression to the mean since July. With the infusion of new talent from within, Jacksonville may able to reverse some of its fortune and sneak into the playoffs. However, even if they don't, some of their top prospects will get a chance to impress and prepare to make another push in 2054.
