Dugout Dirt 2051.6

Post by jjw » Thu Jul 07, 2022 5:51 pm

Your faithful correspondent has been made aware of some tension between the Hurricanes owner, multimillionaire and Virginia Beach native Tuck Friar, and his new GM this season, Jack Whalen. Friar expressed great unhappiness on the team's progress -- more accurately, its lack thereof -- this season. With Jacksonville now 5 games under .500, and showing no signs of improvement over the past two months, Friar expected more (a playoff berth, in fact).

But the team's finances also have him in a dither. They are 11M in the hole, with no apparent way to get out of it; at least not during the 2051 season. Friar complains that expenses have to be cut, but has yet to suggest how that is to be done. Trading the player with the 28M contract, RF David Simpson, would instantly solve the financial problem, but Whalen has dangled Simpson in front of a number of Brewster clubs with no success. The trade deadline is nigh, perhaps there will be a breakthrough before hand, but Whalen informed Friar he should not count on it.

All of Friar's other complaints -- lack of any decent prospects (the Canes best prospect is ranked 110!) and building the farm system (currently ranked dead last in the Association!), need to upgrade at the second base position (even though Whalen politely explained to his owner that Freddy O'Bryan's play there since being called up earlier in the season from Gotham has been quite decent (258/362/454 -- he has also played some games in CF, versatility that Whalen and manager Khayyat bin Luqman both value) -- these all require money, yet more money is not something that Friar is willing to spend at this juncture.

Your correspondent will continue to monitor Friar's unhappiness, and Whalen's efforts to respond.

Could be worse. At least Simpson will be off the books after the season. With that money you could save it to cover what you lost this season or get 5-6 good players.
