Dugout Dirt 2051.5

Jacksonville pretty much has been treading water the past two weeks, remaining just out (by 1.5 games) of wild card contention, and now two games above .500. The injury bug continues to plague the club. Just as veteran relieverJorge Navárez returns, one of their better hitters this season, SS Larry Barkin, goes down with a broken cheekbone, out for at least a month. Dave Davis has been recalled from AAA Gotham to fill Barkin's slot. At least outfielder Jude Stephens has finally recovered from his injury and is also back on the roster, but Gary Brooks and Pedro Huerta, acquired in exchange for Júlio Uribe, have been filling in well enough in the DH role, so Stephens will have to sit much of the time for now.

The starting pitching continues to be good (only one guy in the rotation has an ERA above 4, and Stephen Best's 4.12 barely exceeds that mark) and the bullpen is adequate, with closer Alejandro Chávez and his 16 saves, 2.00 ERA and 1.04 WHIP putting him near the top of the class in the Johnson League. 25 year-old Chung Chan has been decent in the setup role, and Mu'tazz bin Akram has done surprisingly well in middle relief.

Yet the offense is struggling still, staying close to the bottom of the league -- indeed, the entire Association (yet David Simpson, of the huge contract, is having one of his best seasons ever, although his HR output is down, with slash numbers of 293/423/508). Until the club starts to hit, and losing Barkin will have to hurt here, a playoff slot will be very hard to achieve.

(One last thing of note: Jacksonville has played a very large percentage of its games at home so far: 40 vs only 16 on the road. That would normally be an indication that their record was about to worsen as they played more away games, but the team has in fact played better on the road, going 10-6 away vs 19-21 at home. So perhaps this differential in home v away games will not matter so much in the weeks to come.)
