Dugout Dirt 2050

The Hurricanes are under a new GM, and owner Tuck Friar is cautiously optimistic and yet somewhat patient as well. Friar told GM Jack Whalen, who just took over this week — a day after the Canes were bounced from the playoffs in three straight by the Frontier Division's Mexico City Aztecs — that he expected Jacksonville to build a championship team over the next four seasons. But then he has some interesting attendance objectives, wanting to increase the game average to 57,000 from its current 52,000+. That seems a very challenging goal, but Whalen sensibly had no comment.
Jacksonville faces an important decision regarding catcher Pepe Prieto's upcoming free agency. The team's regular backstop since 2045, Prieto's stats have slipped the past two seasons (his 2050 slash numbers: 197/294/408) and while the club will miss his 18 home runs his 6M contract expectation may be too rich for the Canes to manage, And then there is the situation with veteran star right fielder David Simpson, who is 33 years old and whose numbers have also slipped (2050: 220/31/65). Simpson currently has a 28M annual salary with a player option for 2051, and honestly, Canes fans are wondering whether it would be to the team's advantage if Simpson decides to try free agency rather than exercise his option to stay with Jacksonville.
"These are interesting times," was all Whalen had to say.
