Dugout Dirt 49.07 - Canes Holding Auditions at Shortstop

Post by DugoutDesperado » Sat Nov 27, 2021 10:52 pm

With the departure of former shortstop, Daryl Pris, the Canes’ front office took to the free agency market to check out the options. Daryl hit .205 during the 2048 season while doing an above average job with the glove. After a few unsuccessful attempts at landing a free agent, Jacksonville had the list whittled down to three candidates and made an offer to all three since backup shortstop Jose Nunez also went to free agency. Those three candidates were Motonobu Yamashita, Robbie Krok and Dave Davis. As luck would have it, all three accepted an offer even though there were only two spots that needed filled.

Yamashita was the first option signed at a $3.4M/one year contract. Montonobu is a noticeable upgrade at the plate hitting .298 last year but does not cover as much ground up the middle as Pris. He also had an on-base percentage of .329 but only had one homer and 9 steals over 393 at bats.

Next was Krok who was signed to a $1M/one year contract. He has a comparable glove to Pris but unfortunately has a comparable batting average hitting .221 in Louisville last season. Krok only had 77 at bats last season and had an on-base percentage of .381.

Finally, Davis was signed to a minor league contract with an option of $900K if he is placed on the major league roster. Davis has the best range at shortstop out of the three and also can play backup at first base if needed. Davis hit .268 with an on-base percentage of .318 last season for Atlantic City but only had 41 at bats.

Who will come out of this audition with the starting role? Only time will tell.
