Dugout Dirt 47.02 - The Power of the PEN

Post by DugoutDesperado » Tue Jun 22, 2021 3:54 pm

Many in the league are surprised at the blistering performance of the Jacksonville Hurricanes in the 2047 season to date. While a fair amount of followers may have thought the Canes had a chance of playing .500 and having a chance at a playoff run, few would have put money on Jacksonville leading the JL Atlantic and laying claim to the best record in the BBA after 68 games with a 46-22 record.

Two major questions arise from this season to date outburst. Can this run last for an entire season including a deep playoff run? How in the heck did this happen? While it is doubtful that the Canes will continue on this 112 games worth of wins over the season, it may not be totally unrealistic that they may be in the upper 90’s (barring major injuries).

As for the question on how in the heck did this happen, we will look at the Canes’ bullpen in this newsletter. Over the off-season, the Canes lost Fernando Guerrero to free agency after a subpar year in his return from injury. Taking his place was 31 year old Jose Castro who was acquired in a trade with Mexico City along with Shainsaku Ine for Felipe Delgado and a few others. Castro has responded this season so far with a league leading 22 saves in 22 opportunities with a 1.40 ERA and 32 K’s in 25.2 innings. Cristo Munoz is also handling his share of the relief duties with a 1.34 ERA in 40 innings of work

All in all, the Canes currently have 8 relievers, all with an ERA of 3.49 or less which has them at the top of the ERA bullpen charts with a team ERA of 2.28. Seven of those eight relievers have been acquired via trade or free agnecy over the last five seasons.

The stats of the bullpen so far this season are shown below: (Jose Martinez is the lone Canes' starter with an ERA under 3.49 at this point)

Hopefully for the Jacksonville faithful, this trend can continue all the way until this edition of the Canes become banner-worthy.

I'm really starting to think pitching has overtaken offense in the league. There are some stud pitching efforts going on around the league.
