Dugout Dirt 47.01 - Three Youngsters and an Old Fart

In the five plus seasons since the Canes re-organization that brought in Gregg Greathouse, the Canes Front Office made a concentrated effort to bolster the pitching talent throughout the organization. This season’s starting rotation includes three pitchers drafted through this time frame.

Looking at the Canes’ rotations, we start with the staff ace Scott Davis. The 22 year-old right hander was drafted in the first round with the fourth overall pick in the 2043 draft. Scott has started the season with an 11-1 record while accumulating 71 strikeouts in 79 innings and maintaining a 3.95 ERA.

Trying to keep pace with Davis is 24 year old right hander Peter Dean. Dean, who was drafted in the first round with the sixth overall pick in the 2045 draft, has a 7-4 record with a 4.14 ERA.

Rounding out the trio of youngsters is Takehide Gertrudes. Takee is a right-handed 23 year-old who was selected in the second round of the 2042 draft. After a hot start in 2047, Takee is sporting a 3.79 ERA with a record of 6-5.

The old fart of the group is right-hander Jose Martinez. The 33 year-old is currently the owner of a 7-2 record and a 2.91 ERA. The trade that brought Martinez to Jacksonville at the cost of George Washington, Ka’im Muntasir and Bhumimitra Keshab raised a lot of eyebrows at the time, but has paid big dividends thus far in 2047. The veteran presence of Martinez has also went a long way in nuturing the youngsters.

Combining these four with middle-ager 27 year-old Domenic Blondell and you have the makings of a starting rotation that has kept the Canes in the first place slot in the JL Atlantic Division through the first 60 games. Blondell is 6-5 so far this season with an ERA of 5.20.

If this rotation stays healthy, as well as the defense behind them, the Canes stand a chance to be in their first post-season in 7 years.
