Dugout Dirt 46.01 - Canes Announce Plans for New Ball Park

Post by DugoutDesperado » Mon Feb 08, 2021 9:18 pm

As Jacksonville looks forward to providing a more integrated overall experience/night-out on the town, the Canes front office is happy to announce its next phase of plans to construct a new stadium with a 55,000 seat capacity which is scheduled to be ready at the beginning of the 2046 season.

The sponsor for the stadium will be CSX, a major railroad corporation which is based in Jacksonville and is one of its major employers. The stadium will hence be named, The Station @ CSX Field. Along with the Jacksonville Hurricane emblems and history, the park will also have a secondary railroad theme to it as well. There will be a miniature train station in a corner of the stadium with a half scale train that will help shuttle fans between the parking lot to and around the stadium.

The stadium will have a retractable roof to allow for borderline inclement weather and to provide a more comfortable viewing experience during the early and late months of the season while still providing the ability to play on a grass field to help with the wear and tear on the athletes’ bodies.

There is a three-level bleacher arrangement behind the plate that extends all the way down the first and third base lines. The second level is luxury suites with 12 rows of bleachers in front of them. The lower level consists of 30 rows of seating while the upper level consists of 18 rows.

Around the outfield there are only 30 rows of bleachers to allow for the backdrop to be framed by the St. Johns River. This will allow for the boats to be included in the fireworks shows when they become available. Along with a retractable roof, there will be a wall that opens up above the outfield bleachers to allow visibility to the river.

Under the lower level, there will be six restaurants that will be accessible both internally and externally from the stadium. The marquis restaurant/gathering place will be called “The Yard”. The menu will resemble that of your typical steakhouse with its signature item being a 29 ounce steak called “The Chamberlain” in reference to the Jacksonville career home run leader Long Chamberlain. The 29 ounces is in reference to the year that Chamberlain was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2029 and finished his career with 560 home runs.

The second restaurant will be called “The Depot”. The menu here will include all sorts of food including Italian, chicken wings, burgers, pizza and subs. The Railroader’s Special will consist of pizza and wings.

The restaurant with a Mexican Theme will be called, “The Loco”. The main dish offered on this menu will be the Imperial which will include the customer’s choice of a chimichanga or a quesadilla along with rice, refried beans and an order of loaded nachos.

The next restaurant will be called “The Shanghai Crossing”. Chinese food will be most of the offerings here where you can get anything from egg rolls to the sesame chicken based dish named Winner, Winner Sesame Chicken Dinner.

Also included will be a restaurant called “The Hogger”. The main dish offered at this establishment will be, you guessed it, will be Barbequed Ribs. Other pork-based dishes such as a variety of pulled pork sandwiches and tenderloins will be offered.

Rounding out the main eateries will be called “The Caboose”. This will be the last restaurant to stay open and will inevitably be the place visited by workers of the other restaurants and maybe a player from time to time if the patrons are lucky. Among the items in the menu will be breakfast items like pancakes and other grand slam favorites to help soak up any liquidation consumed by the fans over the course of the evening. One of the main dishes offered here will be called “Grady’s Closer” that will include a stack of pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs and grits. This dish is is reference to long-time closer Peter Grady who spent the majority of his career with the Hurricanes and recorded 303 saves over his career.

On the second and third levels there will be roughly a dozen of the more traditional ballpark concession stands and bars. The marquis bar will be called the “Eighth Notch”. Other main bars will be “The Hotshot” and “The Night Owl”. There has been much thought given to make sure that there is enough capacity to get the crowds through the eating portion of the day in time to still get situated and enjoy the game. All of the restaurants and bars will have ample monitor viewing to watch portions of the game while they eat as they can hear the crowd roar when the Canes make a great play.

There will be a main souvenir shop on the lower level that will push the new stadium’s layout and theme along with various shops on other the other two levels.

Along the first and third base lines in the lower level there are baseball themed arcades with pitching cages/radar guns with food/drink vouchers for the fastest and most accurate pitches. The front office has been giving a lot of thought to providing a total family experience while they are at the stadium.
The field dimensions of the park add a little extra room for the pitchers than the current Fidelity Field ballpark. The dimensions at The Station will be 340 feet down the right field line with 380 feet in left field increasing to 400 feet in left-center field with dead center measuring in at 417 feet. Rounding out the other half of the diamond are the same dimensions with right-center at 400 feet, right field at 380 feet and the right-field line at 340 feet.

Around the field, there will be three jumbotrons to show scores, stats, pictures and live audience cams. There will be five banners of current players displayed in various spots around the outside of the stadium.

Initial reaction from the fans is that there is a lot of anxiety in the air around the new stadium, its theme, and what it will add to the following of the Hurricanes. The fans are hoping that in addition to the new atmosphere and surroundings that there will be some new faces via the free agent market to add an impact to last year’s 73-89 record as well as some of the talent that has been groomed in the Jacksonville farm system over the last 5 years.

Manager Gregg Greathouse was quoted as saying, “This stadium has been in our vision for the last 4 years since I left Beirut and arrived in Jacksonville. Once the stadium is completed, we will need to make sure that we bring in the talent to go along with our youngsters to help provide the experience for which the fans have been yearning.”

Time will tell if reality meets the vision over the next few years.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guess you were hungry when you wrote this...

I like the descriptions of the field. Well done.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
