Editor's note: At this point negotiations are underway to determine who has the rights to the Dugout Dirt presses and circulation or if a new name will be required.

July 6th, 2041 …. The Cedar GM, Gregg Greathouse was sitting in his normal suite above the third base dugout at the top of the first tier of the bleachers hoping that Beirut could even their record for the season against the visiting Manama Pearls. In a pitcher’s duel that only allowed one run between the two teams, the Cedars were able to tie the score with a run in the bottom of the 8th. Unfortunately, the Cedars bullpen gave up two runs in the top of the 10th to come up on the short end of a 3 – 2 score.

While still sitting in his favorite chair in the suite drinking his vodka along with whatever juice was left, Gregg gets a call inquiring about the recently vacated position with the Jacksonville Hurricanes. Following a flight to Jacksonville early next morning, he met for brunch with his cousin who has lived in Jacksonville for roughly 8 years. Gregg then made the trip to the Hurricane headquarters. The Beirut GM walked into the Hurricanes office building down the main hallway. On the right-hand side of the hallway, he sees the 2031 Landis trophy encased along the way. In other 15 feet, he sees a similar trophy with the 2033 Landis winner engraved. And yet, in another 15 feet he sees the 2039 Landis trophy. Looking back down the left-hand side of the hallway, he sees 12 consecutive playoff appearances leading up to this year.

Walking into the office in which Tyler Simmons had worked, pictures of his numerous victory celebrations, deep-sea fishing trips and visits to various Caribbean resorts with long-time coach Lothar Platzdasch. It was evident that even though Jacksonville is in the midst of a 33 – 52 season, there was large GM shoes to fill.

When taking the Beirut job in 2039, Gregg walked into a similar situation taking over a 27 – 55 team and having them in a wild card spot at all star break two years later (albeit only by one game over both Mumbai and Jerusalem). But this time, the expectations would be different. Beirut did not have the long line of playoff appearances or multiple trophies that the fans have become accustomed to or did not have many established GM’s that knew their teams’ histories from personal experience.

After weighing whether to stay in the comforts of Beirut of charter into the unknown waters near Jacksonville, the decision was made. As of July 7th, 2041, Gregg Greathouse would call Jacksonville his home.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
