Tropical Tidbits: 39.05 - Canes 2039 Draft Review

Post by udlb58 » Wed Jul 17, 2019 4:35 pm

Normally, prospects wind up being traded around here before they ever see the light of the BBA, but more prospects have been graduating in Jacksonville the past few years than before. With 5 picks in the top 75, hopes are high for the 2039 draft class. Which prospects have a chance of featuring in Jacksonville down the road? Find out below!

1.32 IF Jeremy Pickens - More of a high floor, lower ceiling player. If he can make the transition to short, he could be a solid player for many years. If he doesn't he could be an above average defender at third with enough of a bat to play. Could be a .280 hitter with 20+ HR.
1-S.39 C Felipe Delgado - Very similar defender to Paco DIaz (good behind the plate, but no arm), but the exact opposite player at the plate. He makes a ton of contact, but doesn't walk much and will only hit around 10 HR a year. If he fills out, he could still be a well above average starting catcher.
1-S.41 3B Chris Mann - He is not the type of player that I usually draft, but it is rare to find a left-handed hitter with 10 contact and 11 avoid K potential who can also play enough defense to be viable outside of 1B/DH, especially at 41 overall. He is going to be expensive, but I think I've made an offer he will accept. If he signs, he could one day be a batting champion for the 'Canes.
2.73 C Ramiro Cherón - A little more well-rounded than Delgado with a better arm. He'll push Felipe and hopefully one will develop into a long-term starter.
2.74 3B Holden Dickson - Intriguing, but flawed player. He has a TON of power potential, but the question is if he will make enough contact to realize that talent. He also has a cannon arm and should be a good defender at 3rd. Also has the ability to play 2nd, short, and corner OF in a pinch.
3.119 UTL Brady Greer - While best in right field, he has the defense to play, as a reserve, anywhere on the diamond but catcher. The bat is borderline for the BBA, but he could become a long-time bench player down the road. Unfortunately, he will be too expensive to sign.
4.150 SP Walter Smith - Another intriguing but flawed prospect. The righty throws six pitches with above average potential. The HR and BB rates are concerning though. There is also the possibility of him being a potential reliever conversion.
5.180 C Pepe Prieto - Switch hitter with enough potential at the plate to be a BBA player at catcher.
6.210 UTL Eric Betanzos - Can play every position but catcher, is extremely fast, is a great bunter, has solid eye and power, but he doesn't make much contact. If he can improve his contact, he can be a very good utility player.
7.240 UTL Mark Richardson - He can play nearly every position in the field, is a lefty bat, and his bat is nearly good enough to be on a roster if the lefty split is high enough.
8.270 2B Orlando Negrón - Not good defense at 2nd, but he makes consistent contact (with low power). He will not be a Cane though, as he's asking for significantly more than $3.2 million.
9.300 SS Larry Robert - Slick fielder who could be a Zimmer winner at short if the bat develops enough for him to become a starter.
10.330 2B Francisco Rodríguez - Will need to improve his approach at the plate to ever reach the majors.
11.360 3B Melvin Roberts - Below average defense at 3rd, but enough to play. The bat is the question.
12.390 LF Stanley Liston - If you squint, he can play corner OF defense. The bat isn't terrible, but he will need more contact and/or power if he is going to play with his below average defense.
13.420 CF Chad Satchell - Borderline center field defense without a BBA bat, and he's asking for millions.
14.450 RP Gerwin Collin - 22 year old lefty who's below average across the board. Minor league fodder most likely.
15.480 C Mike Costa - Has a solid eye and is a decent defender behind the plate, but he's also asking for too much to be signed.
16.510 RP Kiyomori Oshima - 22 year old lefty with no control. If he can find his control, he could be a lefty reliever. But it's more likely he's out of baseball in a year or two.
17.540 RP Wilbert McGreer - 21 year old reliever with AA potential who wants to go back to school......sure.
18.570 1B Steve Vogler - DH only that needs to develop his bat to make it.
19.600 3B Wayne Campbel -Good clubhouse guy, not really a prospect, and very smart. He'll be headed to college.
20.630 CF Bob Plummer -Good defense and some speed, but the bat needs a lot of work.

I almost took Smith in the 4th but needed to focus on some bats after going SP/SP in the first two rounds.

I really like Mann...I'll be watching his development for sure.

Well piss. I offered Mann top 10 money and he still walked away. Really thought I'd be able to buy a solid prospect with that one.

Ahh, that's brutal.

Being my first draft, I'll be sure to follow the unsigned guys like Mann and [Boise's 2nd rounder] Roman to see how they progress or regress in college.
