Tropical Tidbits 34.07 - Martin Felix Named Coach

Post by udlb58 » Wed Feb 28, 2018 10:34 pm

ImageFormer Moonshiner great, Martin Felix had been serving as an ambassador linking the Hurricanes fans to the club's past in Greenville ever since he was inducted into the club's Ring of Honor in early 2032. With some minor league shuffling among the coaching ranks, the club had an opening for a hitting coach in AA Trois-Rivieres. "We realized there would be no one better to teach our young players than one of the teens. [Felix won two batting titles and one OBP title while with Greenville] We are happy to announce Martin as our new hitting instructor," said GM Tyler Simmons. When asked if Doug Glover's success as a minor league manager had anything to do with the decision, he added "Yes, Doug definitely had something to do with this. We have been excited by his successful transition to coaching and managing and Doug actually recommended Martin for the position. It will be the first time they have worked together since back in 2020 when they were both traded to Madison."

Via a phone interview, Martin said, "I enjoyed my time as an ambassador for the club but I definitely missed the competition and daily grind. I'm a baseball man, and I'm most happy on the diamond. I feel I have quite a bit to offer these boys and can't wait for the start of Spring Training!"

Traded! Yeah, that's the word for it!

I'm not sure you were here back then Tyler. That was a wacky "Waive to Trade" move by Greenville.

I was not around then, but I did go back and see what the heck happened when I saw Greenville had Glover, Felix, Wayne, Weiss, and others not long before I took over (and the system had exactly 0 prospects that were a result of trades for them).

I have absolutely no idea what he was doing, other than he just decided that the team wasn't good enough to win down the road and rather than be bothered with trying to trade them for value, he just WtT'ed them and proceeded to go into outright tank-mode. I mean, I thought I had a good offense this year and we had 32 WAR from position players. That 2020 Moonshiners squad had 41.4 WAR from position players! They had 9 hitters with 2+ WAR that year and the only full-time guys with less than 3 WAR were Mark Davis (2.6) and Chris Bradford (0.4).

Yeah there were some salary things going on in Greenville and he WtTd them. I assumed it was to try and trade them so I put in a claim hoping to work out a trade. Both were sent to me for nothing. It put my team about $15 million over the cap and I used a loophole in the constitution to keep both and play the season over the cap.

That was the end of the Waive to Trade feature in the BBA.
