Tropical Tidbits 34.03 - Canes Stand Pat

Post by udlb58 » Sat Feb 17, 2018 10:41 pm

ImageAfter Sandcastle and Tonche opted out of their contracts, and the team opted out of Scholes', it looked like there could be a lot of turnover in the Hurricane roster for 2034. Instead, the team has come to terms with Sandcastle, Scholes, and a host of arbitration eligible players.

Leon Sandcastle was up and down (and injured) in 2033 and he missed out on all of the Hurricane Landis run. Despite the inconsistency, he was still good enough to earn a Type A designation, and would have easily netted the team a supplemental 1st had they let him test the free agent waters. The team announced this week that he wouldn't be testing free agency, and would be returning to patrol the outfield in 2034. The deal pays Sandcastle $14 million in 2034 with a team option in 2035 set for $12 million.

Also returning will be veteran catcher Paul Scholes. Scholesy was due $11 million over two years before the team declined his option. The two sides agreed on a deal that would pay him just $2.8 million in 2034 with a team option for $2.6 million in 2035.

"Paul and Leon are two great veterans and we are happy to see them return to the club in 2034 and 2035," said Simmons.

In other big news, wonderkid David Noboru inked a 2-year extension to bypass the next two years of arbitration. The deal pays him $4 million next year and $6 million the year after. This sets the team up to possibly sign him to a long-term deal when he reaches his 5th season of service during 2035.

ImageVicente Chavez and Landis MVP Bertram Hahn both avoid arbitration with one year, $7 million extensions. Rocky Gonzaga also signed a one year deal to avoid arbitration. Rob Fuller and Frank Bud sign 2-year extensions at roughly $1 million per season.

This leaves the team with just one potential arbitration case in Edgardo Pagan, but team sources indicate they are close to a deal just under his arbitration estimate of $2 million.

Sources also indicate the team is still working with Jesus Tonche, but the sticking point appears to be the first year compensation. With just 30 players under contract, and only $12.3 million in cap space, Tonche will have to take a large pay cut on his stated asking price of $16 million per season.

i was going to most likely put in a bid on sandcastle if he had gotten to FA, but there are worse strategies than running back a landis winning squad.

Yeah, I have a tendency to hold on to guys when I could be getting comp picks, but it isn't like my track record with 1st and 2nd round picks would point at me actually doing anything with those picks anyway.

Hoping Sandcastle can remain a 9/10 in LF/RF and combine with Chavez and Gonzaga as the top two way outfield in the game.

if they can all stay healthy (and a big if there), you should have some speed and glovework out there for sure. That being said, if i get someone competant with a glove in RF, you might have some competition because lacaze and kamade more than hold their own (if not exceed) your LF/CF.

Sandcastle has only managed about 115 games a season for the past four years or so.

I'd be happy with 130 games again. He was pressed into more use than planned in the middle of the season with the injuries to Chavez and Rocky (and then Beaucage too). Hoping Beaucage can get 35ish starts in RF against LHP, and if Rocky and Chavez stay healthy, Braddock can spell Sandcastle from time-to-time against RHP.

It is a worry. But that is why we have guys like Braddock, Beaucage, Racist, Raines, Underwood, Claudio, and 3 infielders (Arbizo, Pagan, Noboru) who can play the outfield. I'm actually a little more worried about SS depth, especially if Gonzales loses anything defensively.

Yellow Spring has no leg to stand on when it comes to telling Jacksonville how to run a team. ;)

Well, you could definitely tell me a thing or two about drafting in the 1st and 2nd round! Noboru is our only top 75 draft pick to make an impact with the club (in about 20 tries). I think I've drafted both more BBA players and impact players in rounds 3-20 than I have in 1&2.

I approve of all of these moves, though I don't know if I would have had the huevos to gamble on Sandcastle's health as the years tick away.

Yeah, like with Sunshine, we came up snake eyes when it came to the playoffs with Sandcastle. Last time, I moved on when I could have had Sunshine at about the same price point and years as I got Sandcastle for. I regretted that in 2032, hope I don't regret making the opposite decision this time.
