Tropical Tidbits 33.04 - Touch Down Brings Me Round
Despite the haze of a championship still hanging over Jacksonville, the world keeps turning and some huge roster decisions will be made over the next few days.
Castles made of Sand
It all started when word came through that two of the team's top contributors had executed opt-outs on their 2034 contracts. Leon Sandcastle, who was injured all of the post-season, turned down and $18,000,000 option while playoff ace Jesus Tonche executed an opt-out that wipes out 4 years and $30,000,000. Reports say the team is in talks with both to try and prevent either hitting the free agent market. Initial reports say Sandcastle is willing to take 2-years, $26,000,000 with a potential option for the 2nd year, while the team and Tonche are further apart. Sounds like the 31 year old is looking for a 6-year contract and the Hurricanes aren't quite ready to commit to that many years at the $16,000,000 per season price point.
Should they stay or should they go now?
The team currently holds options on Mario Mendez, Martin Ssempa, and Paul Scholes. Ssempa's option is valued at far less than his arbitration estimate, but he may not return from his torn flexor until mid-May, which does complicate the situation. As far as the 35-year old Scholes, the team is likely to decline the option that would pay him over $11m over the next 2 seasons, but that may not mean the end in Jacksonville for Scholes, as the sides are in talks to re-work a deal that will keep him around 1-2 more seasons. Mendez is another murky situation. He just had a career year going 18-7 with a 3.85 ERA and is due just $8m, but at 37 and with declining velocity, will he hold it together for one more year?
Core Four
Hahn and Chavez are entering their last year of arbitration and while the club is furiously working on extensions to avoid arbitration, neither seems to be willing to take a multi-year deal. That means Norris Rutledge, Lloyd Braun, Bertram Hahn, and Vicente Chavez will all reach their first year of free agency together, which could force one or more these four all-stars into greener pastures in 2035.
The Kid
Meanwhile, the Canes look to lock in all three of David Noboru's arbitration seasons with the 23-year old willing to talk multi-year extension.

I guess if you are going to deal with this, it might as well be while looking at a shiny new trophy right?Ted wrote:That's a frightening headache. Good luck.

Team and player options put me in this situation. Because of options that I knew were unlikely to be executed, we were technically over the cap in 2034, which prevented me from offering extensions to Hahn/Chavez earlier in the year. Now that they are on the precipice of their last arb year, they are unwilling (and rightly so) to take any sort of multi-year deal that doesn't have a huge increase in year two. Until I know what Rutledge and Braun want, I can't very well offer the other two huge extensions. Also, they are in the front of my mind while talking to Tonche. Don't want an extension of him now get in the way of an extension of any of them down the road.
And we aren't even touching on Rocky, who's final arb year is 2035, or Noboru.
But I can't complain. Each of the 4 has signed at least one team friendly extension.
On the plus side, we only have $12.5m in guaranteed contracts in 2035 (Crow, Cantrell, and Braddock), plus a $3.8m team option for Gonzales that we won't execute but will count against signing extensions.

That's the unwritten problem with giving big option years, even when you don't intend to execute them. They can cause big issues with signing longer term contracts for guys you want to keep around.

Just wondering, is this the way it should work? I suppose the owner doesn't want you to go over budget, but you would think that the GM could tell him, "Hey, we're not exercising that option. Keeping this young star is more important to your wallet."RonCo wrote:That's the unwritten problem with giving big option years, even when you don't intend to execute them. No, it shouldn't work that way, but that's how it is, and as far as I can tell there's not a lot of energy to change the way this works in the development group right now. So until that changes, that design behavior will hit folks pretty hard in ways. We had it with Alberto Sanchez this year. We couldn't offer the deals a couple guys wanted earlier in the year because his $11M was on the books next year.
It would actually be better if you could at least renegotiate deals with outstanding options as the year went on, too.

Just the ability to decline an option at any time during the season before the option is due would be great. It wouldn't have helped me, because Scholes is the only one I'd have declined early, and until Sandcastle/Tonche declined theirs, I would have still been at the 2034 cap.RonCo wrote:No, it shouldn't work that way, but that's how it is, and as far as I can tell there's not a lot of energy to change the way this works in the development group right now. Still, that would be a reasonable feature. Doubly so for online leagues as right now you have one shot to decline an option.

My feeling on this is that the game is designed to "protect" the human GM from making a big mistake...it's as much around the arbitration calculations as anything else, also.
