Tropical Tidbits 33.01 - How We Got Here: Wheels Fall Off
On Thursday, July 14th, the Hurricanes picked up a win over the Tropics to move to 55-37 and a 9.5 game cushion on the final playoff spot. Sandcastle was rallying and healthy, Noboru and Rutledge weren't on the DL, the pitching staff was rolling along....nobody knew just how bad things would get. Here's a look at how we got here.
7/15 @ Hawaii: L, 6-11: The Tropics tagged Pastor Doctor early and often with dingers in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th innings. A 5 run 9th wasn't nearly enough to erase the 11-1 deficit.
7/16 @ Hawaii: L, 2-3 (11 in): Braun breaks a 1-1 tie with a solo shot in the top of the 9th, Montalvo blows his 2nd save since Markeret's injury, and in the 11th Júlio Torror steals 2nd and 3rd (against a lefty with 11 Hold who throws 101 and catcher with 10 Ability and 11 Arm) after a 1 out walk. So we intentionally walk Gerbrand de Best, who promptly steals 2nd (that's 3 steals on the most difficult combo to steal on in the league...and de Best has 7 steal/baserunning). After another intentional walk, a bases loaded, 2-2 single by Backstom mercifully ends the farce and the losing streak is on. (surprised this didn't end on Torror stealing home)
7/17 v Madison: L, 3-4: Chris Lee scatters 9 baserunners, allowing just 1 run over 5, but Beaucage's first error in over 2 years allows the tying run across with 2 outs in the top of the 6th. In the top of the 8th, Jesse Howard allows a lead-off double, then walks the bases full. Andy Cantrell retires the next three batters, but still allows 2 runs off a sac fly and fielder's choice. The rally is cut short when Braun is gunned down trying to go from 1st to 3rd on a single (with Norris fucking Rutledge on deck).
7/18 v Madison: L, 1-8: Tonche was torched for 6 runs on 7 hits and only 2 Canes could muster any hits.
7/19 @ Madison: L, 4-8: The Wolves continue to pound us into ground chuck. Mendez allows 10 baserunners and a 3-run 7th makes this look closer than it really was.
7/20 @ Madison: L, 1-8: The series comes to a gruesome end as Madison puts even the women and children to the sword, outscoring us 28-9 over the 4 games.
7/21 v Brooklyn: L, 0-4: I'm sensing a trend here. For the 6th straight game, the offense is completely ineffective, and the game was called due to 'bad weather' (probably the fans raining beer bottles on the field).
7/22 v Brooklyn: L, 5-7: Hey the offense did something! Frank Bud goes off, finishing a triple shy of the cycle (though he only had 1 RBI). A 4-run 7th by the Robins dooms the Canes. "'We're our own worst enemy right now,' said Jacksonville skipper Lothar Platzdasch." You said it buddy.
7/23 v Brooklyn: L, 5-7 (10 in): The Kid tries to put the team on his back, reaching base 5 times and driving in 3 himself. But it isn't enough as it's Cantrell's turn to blow the save and Montalvo gives up a 2-run 10th inning blast to take the loss.
7/25 @ Nashville: L, 4-5 (12 in): We jump out to a 3-run lead in the first thanks to a lead-off HR by Noboru and a 2-run double by Rutledge. But, Howard blows it in the 8th. It looks like we might pick up our first win in extras when Beaucage plates Pagan in the 11th, but the bullpen (Montalvo this time) blows the lead for the 2nd time late in the game and we eventually lose in 12.
7/26 @ Nashville: L, 5-6 A 9th inning single by Gonzaga ties the game, but Jesse Howard blows his 2nd game in a row in the bottom of the frame (why is my long reliever getting back-to-back save opportunities?!)
7/27 @ Nashville: W, 11-1 The streak emphatically (and mercifully) comes to an end at 11 games. Noboru goes 3-3 with 4 RBI. We technically outscore the Goats 20-12 in the series...so, there's that.
7/29 v Rockville: W, 13-6: What is this, a winning streak! We ride our 8 and 9 hitters to the win as Braddock and Arroyo combine to go 5-6 with 2 walks, 5 R, and 6 RBI. Chris Lee holds on for the most Chris Lee of victories (11 hits, 6 runs over 6 innings) and LMT gets the elusive 3 inning save.
7/30 v Rockville: L, 4-12: All good things must come to an end, and so must our 'winning streak'. The Pikeys touch up Tonche and cruise to the win.
7/31 v Rockville: W, 7-3: Home runs by Noboru and Braddock, along with some solid work from Mendez and Cantrell, salvage the series and bring this shit-storm of a month to a close. At least August can't be this bad.....right?....RIGHT?!

Yeah, I know I was excessively pessimistic (and obnoxious with our 1-run/x-inning records) in the chatter threads, but going 9-27 when leading the division will do that to you.Ted wrote:Yikes.udlb58 wrote:We started the month 6-15, going 0-8 in 1-run games...Ted wrote:Ouch. Umm, how was August?
