Tropical Tidbits:39.04 - 'Canes M*A*S*Hing

Injuries are mounting in Jacksonville. Star sophomore center fielder Rocky Allen is set to come off his 2nd DL stint of the young season (twice the number of DL stints in his pro career) and fellow sophomore Edgardo Encarnacion was placed on the DL recently and isn't expected back until June.

With those two out, more bad news came today as the Hurricanes have placed Allen's backup Mitsuhide Suzuki on the DL. Lucikly Allen is expected back and Suzuki's injury appears minor. However, steady left fielder Victor Batista's shoulder injury looks like it could keep him out of the lineup until June as well. Though he isn't considered a star, Batista's production will certainly be missed. He's been a consistent .270/.320/.530 hitter and has been on a 30 HR pace each of the past 3 seasons.

Even with their time missed, Allen/Suzuki/Batista/Encarnacion have combined for over 2 WAR this month alone (more than the rest of the lineup combined), and the Canes do not have the overall depth that they have had in previous seasons. Luckily, the injuries have mainly hit the outfield, which is one of the deeper position groups in the organization. Despite the injuries and early slumps from White/Martinez/Noboru and company, the Hurricanes are just half a game behind New Orleans and still in a solid position.
