Monarchs acquire Julio Feliz from Wolves
At the trade deadline the M’s acquired Julio Feliz from the Madison Wolves for 18 year old prospect Bartolo Acuna.
Feliz a 33 year old veteran leftie pitcher I splaying in his ninth big league season. He has previously played in Montreal and Madison and sports a career 54-39 record and 4.42 ERA. The team wanted to add a lefty starter. In his past three seasons in Madison Feliz has posted a sub 4.20 ERA and winning record every year. Feliz in under contract until 2015 at a rate of 3.5 million per. The move was not only for this year but also provides a reliable rotation option at a cost much lower than what he would probably get on the open market.
I’m not entirely sure at this point what role Feliz will have moving forward. In Montreal Feliz was used primarily as a reliever and in Madison was used exclusively as a starter. With fellow lefties Todd Mckeever and John Ward also likely playoff roster players the team has positioned itself to be able to drastically alter it’s starting rotation based on matchups. It’s a nice situation to be in.
Acuna is still fairly raw at 18 years old but projects to be a solid big league player at some point. It was tough to give up him but it’s always nice to add established big leaguers for prospects as a playoff team.
