Monarchs Draft Report

Here are the Monarchs top three picks in the 2010 amateur draft.

With the 17th pick in the first round the Baltimore Monarchs selected Sergio Pena. Pena is a corner outfielder who projects to have good contact and power and an average eye. He should develop into an everyday player but will not likely ever be a superstar. At 21 he had a great year at A ball and could see time at AAA next year. With Daniel Labrie getting close to the end of his career Pena will be looked at to pick up some of his production.

With their second round pick the Monarchs took a lefty starter by the name of Yoshiaki Sasaki. The 18 year old is a long way from the big leagues but does project to a solid four/five guy as a starter. If he adds velocity he could add more stuff to his solid movement and control projections. Sasaki started in Rookie League and may make the jump to A ball next season.

Catcher Brad Humberwas the Monarchs third round selection. Humber is a lefty batter with an average bat and defense. The team hopes he can develop into a decent backup option. At 22 Humber struggled in AA and will repeat at that level next year. His power and eye development is lagging his contact at the moment and he will need to develop those to make the jump to AAA.
