It started out as a non descript game between the Robins and Charlotte, and wouldn't have been anything more than a story. That is, until the face of the Robins Jose Torres was down holding his knee during the 5th inning. A collective sound of silence cut through Ebbets Field, as what had been a promising if mixed season that pointed towards the end of the drought all of sudden looked like the dream was going to die. 4 months. Season over. For a fanbase that has endured losing season after losing season, this might have been a new low.
Robins Chief Baseball Officer Ben Heuring was solemn as he announced the news at a press conference after the game. "Obviously, I hope that Jose can use his rehab to come back stronger. I can promise Robins fans two things. One, we aren't throwing in the towel. As long as we are in the playoff hunt, I will do everything in my power to make sure that this season can still be a success. We have a lot of good players here, and our trade we made today will make us better both now and in the future. Two, this could have happened at any time to anyone. Alfredo Trujillo was able to come back from his back injury and still be incredible this year. I have no doubt that Jose will come back stronger and learn from this."
The headline in the Brooklyn Eagle the next day summed up the mood of Robins fans. "What Did We Do To Deserve This?"
