With the Robins looking to retool after deciding to attempt to reboot their pitching staff and add some different looks to their outfield, a lot of speculation was on who would come in to play center field. It was no surprise that the Robins have attempted to upgrade their defense with the confidence that their offense would continue to be towards the top part of the Johnson League ranks and to help their pitching staff improve their rankings.
Signing Andrew MacColl is going to help with that. He spent the past two years in the GBC, which has a strong tradition of allowing players to develop, make a living, and has sent a number of GMs into the BBA over the past few years. MacColl is someone who has speed, some good glove work, and would offer something as a bottom of the order/top of the order guy to add some balance to a power heavy Robins lineup. Ultimately, he is on a short contract and if he can put up the same numbers as he did in the GBC the past two years, he could be the type of signing that could help the Robins take the next step.

Center field is going to be an interesting position to watch in the next few years.

I have Bullock in the minors, but he is going to need some more time given that he was drafted when he was 16.

Blast from the past for me. MacColl was on the Bears roster when I took over the team. I remember him being a platoon bat.

I don't think he has to platoon, but he's going to be borderline at best with the bat. He'll be an interesting test case for whether the league's defensive ratings are shifting enough that his 8 range will keep him competive in the field. If so, he'll be a workable stopgap. Otherwise, back to the drawing board. But really, finding true center fielders when you don't have much to work with is getting tough again.
There was a time when a 7 range could sometimes at least play out there. But that time was long past. If it comes around again, this looks better.

I wanna say he was 8 range back when he was putting up those positive ZRs for me in CF.
