Brooklyn State of Mind: Robins Draft Cookie Monster With #2 Pick (2057.10)

Post by lordtoffee » Tue Nov 28, 2023 4:55 pm

The 2057 BBA draft has been going on, and the Robins held the 2nd overall pick. There were a number of options that the Robins could have gone with, with some speculating that the Robins would try and get a position of need while others were thinking that they could even look at getting some pitching to balance their farm system a little bit. But instead of doing one of those paths, the Robins ended up picking up Cookie Monster Trujillo as their second round pick. So why get the Cookie Monster?

It's simple. The thing is that while the Robins do have the 18th ranked farm system according to Baseball America's ranking, Brooklyn's front office wanted to go for someone who offered a very well rounded player who could still improve. Cookie Monster has shown a very well developed game with multiple tools of hitting, power hitting, speed, and good plate discipline. While he isn't great defensively, he could play 2nd if worse comes to worse. He is also someone who is a potential DH at the BBA level, and would be able to iron out some things in the minors without having to come in right away to be a savior type prospect. Sources within the Robins front office say that they view him as a potential replacement for McBride, and that this move is to try and proactively fill a hole down the road should the Robins need to do a rethink at 2nd base.

So while this might not convince the doubters, this information should explain why the Robins did what they did.

He was part of the "elite position players" tier for sure so I see no issue with the pick.

And we could totally have a Sesame Street night with Cookie Monster making an appearance.

I’ve been trying to evaluate the players in the draft by comparing them to “real life” players. Elsewhere I called Amberman “Wade Boggs with speed”; Trujillo is kind of “Rod Carew lite”. That’ll play…

The Boggs analogy isn't bad at this point, though Amberman hits right handed. But I think Trujillo is more Chase Utley without as much glove.

Carew was a different kind of beast. :)

I like this analogy much better. Carew wasn't a power hitter.

Yeah, you’re right… I was just trying to come up with a guy who could really hit, started out at second, then eventually moved to first. Maybe George Grantham would be a better comp if you wanted to go waaaaay back…
