Brooklyn State Of Mind: Robins Trade McFadden for Lugo (2055.2)

While the free agency and Rule 5 drafts have been getting a lot of attention this year, the Robins ended up swinging a trade with Rocky Mountain that should help both teams fill a need. Chris McFadden will be going out to the mountains, while Jorge Lugo returns to Brooklyn after being traded to the Mad Popes a decade ago. Hard to believe that was so long ago. While McFadden was pretty good offensively, it was no secret that the Robins have been looking for some upgrades defensively.

Lugo is someone who has been able to play multiple positions in addition to third, and being a 2 time Gold Glover means that the Robins should be able to have better defense either at third or up the middle, all while keeping room under the salary cap for additional reinforcements that are pending. Lugo could play third, but rumors out of Brooklyn have said that the Robins are looking at all options with Lugo, and could ask him to play up the middle. Regardless of where Lugo plays, the Robins defense will get better even if some free agency moves don't materialize.

With the departure of McFadden, the major question is what will happen to Wilson Prieto. The top 100 prospect and first round draft pick rose all the way to AAA San Francisco at the end of last season, though he didn't do well in a limited sample size. The Robins are rumored to have plans to invite him to spring training to get a look at him, but the plan for Prieto is to begin the season with the Doves in order to give him some playing time with the expectation that what he does in that playing time will determine if he makes his major league debut at some point in 2055.

Lopez should be a +10 ZR guy at third.
