This year is hopefully the year that the Robins have hit rock bottom, but there were a couple of bright spots. Some players were able to shine in a city where the stars are often judged on a harsh curve. But only one player could be called Robins player of the year, and that is Tommy Bailey. The outfielder was one of the offensive leaders of the team, hitting with a blend of power and contact that made watching Robins games at the very least less horrible than the record would indicate. While he probably won't win a ton of awards, he might get a vote here or there.
Say what you will about the Robins hemorrhaging star talent, but Bailey reminds me of an old NBA trade. In 2003, the Milwaukee Bucks traded Ray Allen for Gary Payton in one of the worst trades you will ever see. But lost in the controversy was that Michael Redd took advantage of the chance he got, and turned into one of the best offensive guards in the league, and was able to take his place as a respected very good player. Bailey has taken advantage of the void left by losing Slizz and Vega into becoming a player who is talented and getting his chance to shine.
