The Robins have been fairly quiet as the BBA teams start to fly to Spring Training, but that is by design. As GM Ben Heuring has been navigating the salary cap, he has been focusing on getting core members locked up, as well as making sure that the team can add salary if needed. Which is why the team is proud to announce that the reigning Puckett winner Felipe Vega has been signed to a 6 year extension worth $28 million a year. This is going to come as no surprise to the Robins, as the club has planned to start locking up their outfield stars to extensions in order to give themselves a chance.
"I am very happy that Felipe is going to be staying in Brooklyn for the future. I picked now to sign him as a way to avoid a potential bidding war in free agency. Felipe has been one of the faces of the franchise, and was one of the bright spots in the series against the Outlaws. This contract may be more expensive than some of the other players that compare to him, but I think that it is going to be one that I won't regret in a few years."
One player that you can compare Vega's contract to is that of Boise OF Dennis French. French is around the same age as Vega, and is the face of the Spuds franchise. He is only making $19 million, and the cap hit is going down for the rest of his contract. So, why give Vega more money? Well, Vega has been very durable in the majors, has more plate discipline, and signed his contract when he was younger. So although Boise in theory can spend more on an extra player or two to win a hypothetical playoff series against Brooklyn, Heuring can focus on seeing how he can get another OF signed up to a long term deal.

that is a big contract, better hope that range holds because he is passable in LF now, if he has to shift to DH that will be brutal. Will be interesting to see the inevitable slizz deal in a few years, since he is as valuable (and probably moreso).

I agree. It is a huge contract and a bit of a risk. That being said, I expect Slizz to be paid about that much, though that depends on what the market is going to look like.
