With the impossible task of the Brooklyn Robins winning the Atlantic becoming more and more real every day. The associated press has gathered in the Brooklyn Media room. History suggests that the Robins will make a big trade mortgaging the future for a 30 something on the decline. The GM has said otherwise though, stating that he needs to walk a fine line between winning the Landis and leaving the team in good shape for new owners. But sometimes solutions aren't so simple.
The media has called for right fielder António Cordero's job for quite some time. Despite his 1.6 WAR, many call into question his legitimacy. The Brooklyn GM has publicly backed Cordero. But that's his job isn't it? You can't really call yourself a playoff team with a 5/7/5/6/5 boy among a position of seemingly 9/9/9/9/9 men. There was speculation that the team coveted several players and even kicked the tires on has beens like Mitch Dalrymple and William Wood at various points in the season. A sure sign of desperation.
Then, the bullpen. The Robins bullpen has been called into question multiple times on various podcasts recently. Brooklyn's bullpen ranks 15th in the Johnson league in ERA. While one could argue the merit of using ERA to judge ERA as a measuring stick for RP... that is an argument for another day. Imagine combining Shawn Huber with youngster Ramón Martínez? Martinez may not be a household name yet, but he will be very soon. The lefty is on pace to top out at 12/12/11 ratings versus left hand batters and has silently accumulated the 2nd most WAR(Huber #1) by a RP this season. That would be the most shut down bullpen in the game with one move.
So there you have it folks. Who do you think Brooklyn should trade for? Should they even make a trade?
