Four COF, Three Spots

Someone is going to be left out of the fun.

Would you believe that a BBA team has too many corner outfielders? I know... crazy right. Despite trying to avoid acquiring corner players, Brooklyn still has too many of them. Only one was drafted. Two were traded for. And the other? He was signed as a minor league free agent at age 25 and bumped larger then Quasimodo.

Like the saying goes... it's a good problem to have. Brooklyn wrestled with trading one of them for pitching all winter. But in the end, figured at some point it was just going to work itself out. Someone lumps, someone gets hurt... you know that random luck shit that everyone uses as an excuse when they lose. The Robins decided that since three of the four are very young and have options... why not keep them all so when something inevitably goes wrong with one, they would have a quality bat waiting to step in. But who ends up as the odd man out?

Felipe Vega
Let's be real here. Vega is not going anywhere. He is a 20 year old lefty bat that destroys righty pitching to a 9/10/8/7/7 clip. You can argue his defense and say he isn't a real outfielder. But at 6/6/7 ratings there are far worse players standing in left in the BBA. He may even end up being our DH depending on how the team breaks. Vega was brought up in September and posted a .284/.383/.637 line in his first 28 games. He is legit and ready.

José Ramos
Ramos was supposed to be just as good, if not better then Vega. After a blistering start to his pro career he has seen a few setbacks. None the less Ramos now stands at 9/9/8/5/6 VS righty pitching. So he is no slouch by anyones standards. Like Vega, he won't win any Zimmer Awards. His 5/9/9 outfield skills are not the greatest. He has seen some bumps to his arm and error, so that is good. And having the under rated range of Juan Sweetworld and António Cordero in center should cover his weakness a little.

Gualtiero 'Tadpole' Crisci
A little over a year ago we saw Tadpole laying in the scrap heap. We almost passed. I remember thinking that he was out of options and didn't have the best personality. We'd likely bring him in, he'd struggle, get released, then we'd be out $500k. But luckily Brooklyn doesn't over value cash and profit margins like other teams do. So we took a shot and won. Crisci went from 5/5/6 to 6/6/8, posted a .273/.379/.427 line, good for 2.7 WAR.

His defense is under rated. You won't find his name on any fancy table or graph in a league feature. That doesn't mean he is bad though. He catches every ball hit his way(just two errors last season) and turns hits into outs(12 OF assists). The latter is important because it exploits a deficiency in todays game. Outfield assists are off the charts and that makes outfield arms more valuable.

Crisci is a good, not great player. The 4th player I'm about to talk about is probably a better hitter. Usually it's best to go with the better hitter. When building a cohesive 27 man unit though, you need to think about fit over total talent. Crisci biggest asset is his ability to get on base. If he is not playing then we don't have that on our team. We need a guy like Crisci to get on base in front of the likes of Vega and Ramos. He adds a dynamic needed to be a good team. Since all you aspiring new GM's like to cook.... let me use this analogy. You are making Tomato Basil soup. You can use the finest tomatoes in the world, but without the basil, it's just mediocre.

Bobby Parker
Parker is likely to be the odd man out. Which is a travesty for the 7/9/8/7/5 VS RHP player. His lucky 7 defense ratings are even good enough to not get ridiculed by the defense police. But he is just 20, struggled at BBA level, has options, and has already bumped. So maybe a full year in triple A isn't so bad.

The Robins are going to have to make a decision eventually. Just not right now. All 4 players have a year or less service time. So they are all on the same clock. And it's not like they can fit the 4th guy in somewhere else. All four are lefty and none can play anywhere but LF/RF/1B/DH. The thought process is that if anything happens to one of those 4 positions(which covers 44% of offensive injury scenarios) we'll have an explosive option to plug and play.

Platoon situations need to be considered as well. Vega and Crisci really don't need a platoon partner. Ramos and Parker do. We brought in team captain Pat Allen to shortside DH and have Miguel Santana if needed to fill another spot. Our 4th Outfielder is Antonio Cordero who will platoon in CF with Sweetworld and come in to play right as a defensive sub VS RHP.

So there is the corner outfield logjam. Are we giving Bobby Parker the shaft? Should we have tried to trade José Ramos for Rafeal or Behner? Comments and questions always appreciated. Both good and bad are welcome.
