After hinting they shortchanged draft budget, Robins sign all 10 including 1st round slugger

For as meticulous and detail oriented the Brooklyn Robins are. They make a lot of boneheaded mistakes. They once traded for a player who never played in a game for them. They once DFA'd one of their starting pitchers on August 1st making him ineligible for playoffs, they once forgot to leave a roster spot open for a player traded at trade deadline who was then ineligible for playoffs. I could go on and on. So when the team claimed that they had underestimated their draft budget. It seemed legit.

The Robins had actually beefed up the budget in anticipation of the increased amount of picks. Going from the usual $3 million to $5 million. But that ended up being extremely ambitious for the amount of picks they had. The Robins had 10 picks in all during the first 5 rounds. Five were their own, 3 were supplemental picks, and two were thrown back from the year prior. This would equate to $500k per pick. Brooklyn drafted with signability in mind, yet still found themselves one player short.

The decision was made to sign everyone but José Ramos. The left handed slugging COF/1B/DH didn't really fit the Robins position flexible player profile anyway. And throwing back a first rounder was probably the better value in this ultra deep draft. After all, they wouldn't lose the pick. It would merely carry over till next year.

But Brooklyn really liked Ramos and gave signing him a second go around. As they were about to lowball him with the $600k remaining in the budget, Ramos' agent reminded us of a BBA rule that says you are allowed to go over budget for one player, if the players is demanding under slot. Anxious to get a deal done, Ramos signed and Brooklyn successfully went 10/10 in signing picks.

This move gives the Robins their second top 100 prospect. Still ranked near the bottom of the food chain, Brooklyn feels that their system has grown by leaps and bounds from the desolate mess it was a year ago and the rebuild is slightly ahead of schedule. It still lack significant top end talent but you'd already be hard pressed to find many teams with deeper systems. And this is just year one. Look for Brooklyn to continue to search for depth, roll over older prospects and prepare for what should be a really solid first round pick next season.

Let's take a look at the current minor league standings for the Robins....

San Francisco Doves (AAA)
54-35, .607, 2½ GB

Memphis Chicks (AA)
56-33, .629, - GB

Twin Falls White Pines (A)
55-33, .625, - GB

George Town Palms (S A)
12-10, .545, 3½ GB

Lexington Sycamores (R)
7-13, .350, 5 GB

Not too shabby. Oddly the Rookie team is faring the worst and they arguably have the most upside. This is probably due to the prospects being very raw 17-19 year olds. Either way, we need to work on that. Winning is an under rated player developmental tool.
