Enrique Salazar Day
Unlike this guy, we're going to make him work for his deferred money
The recent decision to go "All In" and the following "Ultimate Rebuild" was because of mistakes made in the past. THe Brooklyn Robins were haphazard with finances. Most would argue they still are. But that is a TN for another day. Enrique Salazar could be viewed as the poster boy for these mistakes. Signed to a long term contract in 2032. A contract that he is still getting paid $12 million by the Robins for in 2038.
Salazar was a favorite by the team. He helped them win a Landis and the team was forever a little too grateful for. His 6 year $45 million extension was always viewed as an overpay. But the Robins are known for not following league trends and valuations. Even to this day, knowing the results, there is no regrets. This story is probably more valuable to them then the production he would have given if he had no lumped.
The newly retired Salazar was set to travel the world with his riches at the young age of 33. The Robins had other ideas. Due to verbiage in his original extension.
"In the event that said player has a career ending injury or retires during the duration of the contract, said player must continue to perform duties for the franchise"
And with that, Salazar has had to cancel his dream vacation and apparently will spend his summer riding a bus as a coach in the frontier league in Twin Falls Idaho. We phoned Salazar to get a comment... there was no answer.
