2037.10 Bullet Proof

Bullet Proof

(With a depth chart larger then the Brooklyn telephone book, Robins claim they are made of Titanium)

So I was listening to a podcast today on the Brewster Broadcasting Network. During which the show briefly touched on the Brooklyn Robins and in particular, the current infield. All three talking heads were stumbling for words and admittedly had no clue who would even be the starters. How could three BBA "experts" not even know this simple fact. Well it's quite understandable actually. This current iteration of the Robins offense is centered around 4 superstar bats and a revolving door of position flexible role players.

I often touch on this, but never really get into what I actually mean. The ideology of being position flexible and bullet proof mostly has to do with injuries. Brooklyn is all about moneyball 2.0. Recognizing obscure trends and adapting our team to maximize/minimize their effects. We've seen a strong uptick in the injury rate the past year or so. Injuries can make or break a teams season. As can decline, career low years, and the random bs lumping that sometimes occurs out of nowhere. So in order to combat this you need to be a well balanced team and have a lot of backup options. So rather then spending our resources on compiling 9 solid starters leaving us with a crap bench and AAA team. The Robins diversify their options and have a deep sea of options to go to when necessary.

Necessity is not limited to injury though. As you will notice from the list below. A lot of these players are very different. This is done purposely. When the need arises it's not always a matter of "who is next on the depth chart?". It's more like which player in this pool is best suited to help what we are looking to accomplish right now. Many of them also have platoon splits for this very same reason. It allows us to adapt our roster in many ways. From injuries to stacking up our roster against one dimensional opponents with one off appearances.

So let's say Fernando Martinez gets injured. Shocker right? So we need to replace him in LF, but we also need to replace his power and his eye. So maybe we need to add more power and eye incrementally into some other areas to compensate. This can be done fairly easily in this system. In doing so we may have to compensate by weakening other areas. But such is life. Everything is a give and take. Most everyone is interchangeable and the GM is like a music producer(like the uber talented Leo Moracchioli in the header) slightly tweaking each track to make the ultimate mix. Turning down the missed riffs and cranking the killer fills.

On to the depth pool. Brooklyn is still short at SS. That's the hardest spot to fill for defensive reasons. But every other position has 10-15, some cases 20 guys that I would consider playing under the right set of circumstances. The fun part about this process combined with the circumstances behind the teams pending rebuild is that the Robins are prepared to burn through this list at will. Which may mean DFA'ing players at will with total disregard towards controllability just to play matchups better.

Anyway, this list.. I think it's interesting. It's a snapshot inside what I see when I look at this team. Which I know is a lot different then how others view teams. I know some will look and say it's just a whole lot of crap players. That's partially true. But we did make it to the Cartwright a little over a year ago with pretty much the same crap roster. I actually think we are a lot better and deeper now then we were then and plan on crashing the Landis party this season.
