(cause he can't be any worse then the last guy. )

The Brooklyn Robins have never really been a team that has honored the stars of the past. It's been 11 seasons since they won thier last Landis and not one player on that team has become a coach in the organization. The team felt it was time to buck that tradition and start bringing on a face from the past every season or so to throw into the coaching mix. The first player the team decided to go with was.... Orlando 'Sly' Medrano.

That's right folks, just like every other plan the Robins have had for the past decade or so, the BBA Gods decided to take a big steaming shit on it when Medrano decided not to retire. It was thought to be a forgone conclusion. Medrano is a washed up DH with no power at this point, the article was written stating his intentions, he received a final curtain call, and even his son was created as a custom player to further the storyline. But on the date of September 13th, plans began to be altered.

It was "Say Goodbye to Sly" day at Red Robin Park. All 20,000 fans in attendance received a Sly Medrano handle bar moustache. It was meant to give the Robin great one final send off. Medrano had other plans that day. He went 3-5 with 2 runs, an rbi, and even a stolen base. After his 6th inning single, the Robins faithful gave him a standing ovation followed by chants of "You still got it!". It seemed to strike a chord in this proud veterans ego.

Maybe he does still have it? Maybe it isn't his time to retire? So following the game, Medrano addressed the press and said he still has one good year left in him. It remains to be seen if a BBA team will pick him up. Perhaps he changes his mind on January 1st when the next crop of retirees are announced. But for now, Medrano can be nothing more then a player coach.

As with the Robins RP Conversion choice, the team had to scratch off a few names before settling on Mario Méndez. Mario was never really a franchise carrying pitcher while with Brooklyn. In fact his career didn't really take off until after he was traded away(which seems par for the course). But Mario was always a great leader and a stable presence on the staff for close to 9 seasons. He was also one of the key components in "the worst team ever to win a Landis".

While the ink is not dry on the contract. Brooklyn hopes to sign Mendez to serve as pitching coach for the Twin Falls White Pines(A). There are not many prospects to speak of there right now, but with a total tear down and subsequent rebuild imminant, it shouldn't be long before Mendez's skills are put to the test.
