Goodbye to Sly

As the clock strikes midnight on September 1st, the Brooklyn Robins called up a bevy of players. It's not an unusual scene. Brooklyn always likes to utilize the entire roster to their advantage and keep a full dugout whenever possible. One name on the expansion list that pops out is soon to be 38 year old Orlando Medrano. The same Orlando Medrano that has littered the Robins offensive leaderboard for the past 17 years. He is currently in the top 10 in G, PA, AB, H, R, TB, WAR, 1B, 3B, SB, BB, and HBP. His finest accomplishment however, came in 2026 when Sly took home the series MVP award when Brooklyn beat the New Orleans Crawdads for the Landis Chanmpionship.
Medrano joins the team as a suprise nostalgia callup. The Robins have endured a very diapointing season in which they had hoped to repeat a Landis feat on the 10 year anniversary of their last one. While they are not mathmatically eliminated. Being 11 games out of the playoffs with 24 to play would take a miracle. And with a 40 man roster spot juggle-able, it was the perfect time to give a Brooklyn Robin great a proper sendoff.
Sly is not the only Medrano leaving the Brooklyn dugout this season. It was also announced this week that his son Juan Medrano, widely known as the best bat boy in the league, is also retiring. Juanny Baseball is expected to continue his education and quite possibly even follow in his fathers footsteps as a professional baseball player.
Orlando "Sly" Medrano is expected to be more then a spectator in September. Robins Manager Tom Valdez has said that Medrano will be one of the first bats off the bench and will start on select home dates. During the final homestand of the season, all fans in attendance will receive a free "Sly-stache". A replica handlebar moustache like the one Sly has worn throughout his career.
It's widely expected that Medrano will retire at the end of the season and join the Brooklyn organization as a coach. The Robins are also expected to retire Medrano's #20 at some point in the near future.
