After the Robins won 10-8 over the Jacksonville Zombies, Robins Chief Baseball Officer Ben Heuring met the press to discuss questions surrounding if the Robins would be implicated in the serious allegations of the Mad Popes and their dealings in the international amateur free agent market.
Baseball America: Ben, what were your thoughts on hearing about the allegations against the Mad Popes?
Heuring: I heard the rumors, but am confident that the Robins are not in trouble. We were not involved in any trades with Shoeless. That being said, I do keep on monitoring the BBA as a whole, and do consider any move that I think would help the team get better. Thankfully with our finances being good, I didn't feel the need to engage in this dealing.
CBS New York: Are you worried that the Cano deal could be investigated?
Heuring: No, I am not worried. While that deal had a lot of executives talking and debating what me and Chad did, the league gave their approval for the deal. I've moved on, and understand that any critical comments that were made about the Cano deal were just professional disagreements. I'm just worrying about the Robins and seeing if we can take the momentum from winning two series in a row against Atlantic City and Jacksonville to our matchup against Charlotte.
Brooklyn Eagle: The BBA Governing Board has authorized ex Robin Carlos Camacho to investigate those trades by the Mad Popes. Will the Robins work with Camacho and his team?
Heuring: Of course we will work with Mr. Camacho and his team should the investigation require it. I applaud the BBA Governing Board for appointing him to investigate this, and hope that the league can get to the bottom of this and move on.
The Athletic: Do you think that the IFA needs changing after this?
Heuring: This strategy by Shoeless was different, and I can understand why people would be upset about it. What I can say is that the budgets for IFA players are clear, and we spent on a couple of players who can help us if they develop fully, and thankfully don't have any restrictions with signing bonuses next year. As events warrant, I will comment further.
New York Post: On a Robins related question, with the team floating around .500, what can you say about this start?
Heuring: It's early on, but I am pleased with the first couple of series. Our pitching has looked like it is taking a small step in the right direction, our attendance is up, and we have been hanging in there. Our offense has been getting hits and getting runners on. If we can better convert those chances, then we can have a chance to have a little fun later in the year. In particular, Cano and Moore have been hitting well, and some of the guys who were struggling at the plate have started to improve.
