Brooklyn State of Mind: Robins Continue to Add Youth Movement (2052.3)

So the Robins aren't going to be able to make the playoffs this year, but the next generation is continuing to come into focus. With the top rated prospect Emilio Morales in Memphis where he is trying to find his feet, Chief Baseball Officer Ben Heuring wasn't going to rely on just Morales to be the future of the Robins infield. The Robins swung a deal with fellow Johnson League club Boise to acquire 2B Ben Copeland in exchange for pitching prospect Mark Baker.

Copeland made his BBA debut for the Spuds, but he had gotten caught in a numbers game in Boise, and the Robins decided to make a low risk trade. Adding a third top 50 prospect according to Baseball America gives the Robins the 5th best farm system, and the Robins are expected to improve in the draft. Copeland has slotted straight into the starting role at 2nd, and has gotten off to a solid start with his bat.

At a press conference in Brooklyn, Heuring was excited by the move. "Look, we all know that this won't be fixed overnight. But we are making important strides. Ben is going to add to what we are calling 'Baby Robins' after the fictional MLB team Yankees 2017 team that was called the Baby Bombers. With Emilio getting his feet wet in Milwaukee, Talib getting ready in A ball with an eye towards promotion, and the ongoing draft that our scouts feel great about, we are ready to try and take the next step in the offseason by continuing to blend the Baby Robins development with proven major league talent that will excite the fans."
