Brooklyn State of Mind: Talk To Your Kids About Espinosa For Nebraska (2045.4)

Post by lordtoffee » Sat Jan 23, 2021 10:01 pm

The Robins have a magic number of 6 to clinch a playoff berth for the second consecutive year, and they will probably continue to fly under the radar. This isn't the fault of the team, but it is more likely the result of other teams being more interesting. There is a quiet excellence in Brooklyn, that is very much at odds with the general reputation of the surrounding area. Most people associate New Yorkers with being brash and in your face, and that view has some relevance. There is one person who should be getting consideration for the Nebraska award out of the Johnson, and that is a starting pitcher.

Luis Espinosa has been a major key in a Robins pitching staff that has showcased depth all season long. He leads the team in wins with 17, and sits third in the Johnson in wins. But wins are just one of the stats that should interest general managers casting their ballots. Espinosa leads the Johnson in innings pitched with 213, and has 10 complete games. Of those 10 games, 3 of them are shutouts. He may have started the season off as a middle of the rotation guy, but has put himself in serious contention to start a Game 1 on the road. Yeah, he might even take a start that the Robins had an obvious option at the start of the year for a big playoff start. Espinosa is the rare guy who actually pitches better away from McDermott Park at Ebbets Field, recording 9 victories on the road, and allowing almost a run less per game on the road. Robins President of Baseball Operations and GM Ben Heuring had some thoughts on the matter.

"Luis should be in contention for the Nebraska this year. His numbers have been awesome, and has been one of the most improved players on the team. After our ace went down in Spring Training, he has eaten up innings and has been dependable as a rock. You should take a close look at what he has done, and consider that we would have been dead without him."
