Mike Trout...WOW

I completely missed this, but the Angels announced Friday that they renewed Trout's contract for...wait for it...$510,000. That's $20,000 above league minimum. Talk about a surefire way to piss off a player (and, more importantly, his agent). Maybe the Angels are resigned to the fact that they are poised to get reamed after his first Arby year in 2014, and know they won't win the bidding war when he hits the FA market in 2017. Given those assumptions, maybe it does make sense to pay him as little as possible while he's locked in...

Trout renewed by Angels

And we complain about the ridiculous contracts OOTP let's us get away with...

This is actually pretty much the standard for players in the first few years. Then as they get close to their arby years they will negotiate a nice contract with him.

I'm trying to figure out who Peter Bourjos is...can't believe that Trout and Hamilton are happy playing in corners...

Sure. But the "standard" young player isn't the reigning RoY coming off a season where he led the majors in Runs and SBs while turning in a .963 OPS and a ridiculous +10.7 WAR. Not saying they should give the kid $10 million, but there's no need to publicly insult him.

Here is Andrew McCutchen's Salaries (he was a rookie in 2009) who I would say is not your standard player either. As you can see he was paid a low amount for the first three years after his rookie season then they bought out his arbitration years.

2010 23 Pittsburgh Pirates $422,500
2011 24 Pittsburgh Pirates $452,500
2012 25 Pittsburgh Pirates $500,000
2013 26 Pittsburgh Pirates $4,500,000
2014 27 Pittsburgh Pirates $7,250,000
2015 28 Pittsburgh Pirates $10,000,000
2016 29 Pittsburgh Pirates $13,000,000
2017 30 Pittsburgh Pirates $14,000,000
2018 31 Pittsburgh Pirates *$14,750,000

And another example in Albert Pujols - hardly an average player, but the same happened to him.

2001 21 St. Louis Cardinals $200,000
2002 22 St. Louis Cardinals $600,000
2003 23 St. Louis Cardinals $900,000
2004 24 St. Louis Cardinals $7,000,000
2005 25 St. Louis Cardinals $11,000,000

Hamilton should be in the corner. Trout should probably play CF, but Bourjos is just as good defensively (and a pretty highly touted prospect himself, btw) so it isn't too from out of nowhere.
