A Lefty at 3B
For those of you that say a lefty cant play 3B.......happened on Saturday night, Nats @ Arizona.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxe ... 8030.shtml
Gerrardo Parra, an outfielder, came in to pitch. Didnt do so well (0 outs, 5 ERs; though threw some heat - 92mph on his FB) and was taken off the mound to play 3B!
He was there for Brian Dozier, normally the 2B, to pitch to a LHB. Once the LHB got on base, he was switched to 2B and Rendon was put back at his normal 3B position.

Re: A Lefty at 3B
Yep, a lefty OF did. Against a LHB that was facing a 69 mph "fastball."

Re: A Lefty at 3B
Yeah, I watched that game here in Tucson. It was a farcical blow out, and Parra didn't so much play 3B as he stood in the general vicinity of the base while another non-pitcher gave up a bunch more runs. I would struggle to call this "playing third base."

Hey, in the scorebook he played 3B, that's all I'm saying about that.

He is a pitcher. People are making way too much of a deal about that throw. And the catch was good but it’s not like he was Willie Mays out there. That struck me as a classic had to make a good play because he didn’t read it well enough to make it look routine.usnspecialist wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 2:42 amStill not as incredible as vince Velasquez out in LF last week. You're surprised that a pitcher had accuracy? Isnt that what you look for in a pitcher?usnspecialist wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 10:06 amThe arm strength isn't what surprised me, it was the accuracy.bschr682 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 9:52 amHe is a pitcher. In all seriousness there is a difference between accuracy from 60'6" and accuracy from the outfield.

Yeah, but Velazquez also bounced it in front of the plate like your guys do, too.usnspecialist wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 10:21 amHave you seen my staff?GoldenOne wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 10:18 amYou're surprised that a pitcher had accuracy? Re: A Lefty at 3B
There was actually a pretty good story on the athletic (which everyone should be subscribing to) talking about how the Phillies found themselves with a pitcher in LF and a position player on the mound.

Re: A Lefty at 3B
The Reds have been using Michael Lorenzon that way a lot this season. On several occasions this season he'll pitch the 7th or 8th inning then go play RF. I was at the game last Wednesday when he pitched an inning then went out and played RF and made a diving catch against the wall.

Re: A Lefty at 3B
I'm going to do my best Ron Collins' "make a statement then play Devil's Advocate with my own words so I don't really commit to one side or the other" ( )...
As much as I like the old school of pitchers having to hit and all the strategy that comes along with it, and this pains me to say, but I actually think DH in both leagues is best for baseball. More offense (not that we need more guys who just homer and strikeout), 15 more players getting regular time, removes the batting/baserunning injury risk for pitchers, and less substitutions and double-switches makes for a quicker game. Plus it levels the playing field during interleague play and the World Series.
The best argument I've heard is that having a DH in just one league would be like if the AFC made the forward pass illegal or the Eastern Conference made 3 pointers worth 4...when you step back, it really doesn't make sense at all. Either make both leagues have the DH or do away with it completely.

I concur that both leagues should be the same and respectfully submit that I remember back in the day that a real game could be played in under two hours at times. I'm getting old enough that my memory might be failing, but I don't recall DHs being around back then.

Re: A Lefty at 3B
On a serious note, here's a fun little table from BBref wherein you can see the average time of games across the years, among other things (#batters per game actually went up as the DH came in...and that was before mega-reliever usage...which is kind of odd. Lots of interesting things to see here.
