HOF Pyramid

Post by usnspecialist » Mon Jan 21, 2019 3:14 pm

Interesting to see a real life version of this, since I know we had one in the Brewster at some point. Author admits it is purely objective in nature, but still an interesting read.

Might need to be ESPN+/Insider (same thing now) to read it.

Nice.

I have every intention of using Chris's prior work to do some kind of tiers again.

It’s been said before but what a trash class

Baines? Lee Smith? Above average yeah, far from great

Then... A closer? A DH?

May as well put in the bat boys and the clubhouse man

Clemens and Bonds still not in?

I’m not a fan of either, but wow, it makes a joke of the Hall

All time worst induction class at first glance -

Those are just veteran committee guys, the main ballot inductees haven't been announced yet.

I agree with you on Baines, but c'mon, Edgar deserves it for sure.

It's Bill Simmons' idea and he did it in his Book of Basketball where he ranked the NBA HOF.

O I know, I love the idea. He needs to do an update though.

So now we are inducting another DH/non-baseball player into the hof (little letters intentional) and a "user." Since, being an actual baseball player and not just someone that can hit pretty well, is all that is needed and since nobody cares about the authenticity of the game itself, then maybe we should just go ahead and put Pete Rose in the hof....I mean who care if he bet on baseball when the players that cheated the game are getting in? I'm going to start my own hof campaign: "Put Steve Howe on the ballot!" I mean, let's just not have any parameters that matter; Steve Howe was only suspended from baseball a few times for his drug use (I mean MLB took away 5 years of his career for meaningless bans apparently); bring in the cheaters and the non-baseball players. Who cares right? I still wonder how "fatman" Mo Vaughn fell off the ballot...

Rant over. I don't watch MLB anyway; I don't know why I care. I do know, but se la vi.

I have a weird sliding scale on PEDs, though I’m not sure exactly when the scale moves from yes, he’s in to no he’s not. My thought is that in the early days, the structure of baseball was complicit, meaning that baseball itself knew it was going on, but did nothing to stop it and continued to pay people to win at all coast—which means everyone from the commissioner’s office down authorized it. It’s hard to penalize guys for it in that environment

When the league got serious about enforcing and penalizing the use of PEDs, then (in my mind), the situation changes. At this point (and since you can now pick your own time period, you can see why my inflection point is hard to pin down), the players are the culprits.

So, Bonds and Clemens get a pass because they were on the front end. Guys on the late end, I probably wouldn’t vote for. I note Bonds, and probably Clemens, too, had HoF numbers before the whole PED thing … so there’s that. I suspect they will get in at the end of the day, and to be honest I have no issue with the writers waiting on them until later in their eligibility. That’s a fair enough penalty in this weird mess of a HoF that we have.

Anyway, I wouldn’t tell anyone else that they need to view things my way regarding the steroid thing. But after a long time of thinking about the whole PED thing, that’s where I come out.

And Rose, as much as I loved watching him play, wouldn't be on my fake ballot because he broke the only real rule baseball had at the time.
