Unreal World.
OK, tell me more. I own this game. I have played it -- according to Steam -- seven hours. And I survived a bit and then it felt like drudgery. How does it become fun? Does it become fun?
That's the thing about survival games. The concept sounds intriguing, but then I have to keep repeating basic chores and it feels like work.
I had the same experience as you. I bet I loaded it up two or three times, played for a couple hours, then put it aside due to the feeling of worthless tasks. Then, this last time, I loaded it up, played a bit, and died a marvelous death against a bear. Rolled a new character, hunted like a madman, built a cabin along some rapids, and traded my furs to some wandering traders. And realized I had gotten over the hump of just basic survival. I could rework the land, smoke and dry my kills, upgrade all my equipment, and kill the Nez and all those damned vagabonds..

I don't know. Maybe it provided an escape with clear, logical goals at a time I needed something like that. I'm at 321.5 hours.

My current character, from the Owl Tribe, has a stash of five dried/smoked elk, seven dried/smoked reindeer, and three dried/smoked bears as I head into fall. The character somehow worked a superior bear fur, so I'm just about to make myself some quality winter furs with it.
I put restraints on myself to make the game more fun. No making trade goods to amass wealth. No killing animals with a baby with them. No killing hunters/adventurers from tribes, and no fishing (too easy).

This is the hump I need to get to. I never have, in this or really any survival game. I should keep trying, I suppose. Because the concept intrigues me, as does the amazing history of Unreal World being decades in the making.

I remember someone who I only know through a forum gifted Unreal World to me because he loved it so much. He was just buying copies and giving them to folks, like a missionary trying to spread the word.

Thanks for that rec for Unreal World. I will check it out. Glad to also help the Finnish economy at the same time.

I have over 200 hours of Slay the Spire in the past 2 months or so. Sorry for the lack of writing. Was really hoping to get some podcasts done this season too.

Ok I just deleted this game. I realize I'll never be good enough at it and it consumes too much of my time. Back to BBA consuming my time.

I’m somewhat of a board gamer, so most of the non-OOTP stuff I do is adaptations of board games. I like Wingspan, play Potion Explosion for a quick fix, and am trying to teach myself Through The Ages right now.

King Of Tokyo is more fun in person, when you can see your buddy’s face when you force him to put his monster into Tokyo and then proceed to beat the living snot out of it😜😜

I just finished campaign in Red Dead Redemption 2 last night. Great game.

I would love to get Iracing, but I need a new computer (preferably a laptop) and the costs for the tracks and cars that don’t come with the general membership are quite pricey.

Now that football season is over, I spent quite a bit of time just relaxing, playing Fortnite. Now that they have the "no build", I like it because someone can't decide to build a house in front of me while I am shooting at them. I prefer Fortnite instead of Call of Duty (and other games similar) because in Fortnite I usually don't die after 1 shot. It seems in Call of Duty I am dead after I am shot once (which is realistic lol, but still).

I also have recently found the College Football Draft Dynasty game that just released a few months ago and is in the early stages of becoming a great game.

My wife and I have been playing Kingdomino from time to time. She’s not very into board games, but it’s a quick simple game. But the options for 1v1 are slim. We have Codenames Duet but I don’t think we’ve actually ever played it.

I'm not good at when games come out, but these are the three we play the most

Wingspan (possibly my favorite game of all time, a game where you collect birds that eat different things, live in different settings, and provide different bonuses that help you get more birds and/or reach your game goals. The need to balance bird costs vs available resources is just so brilliantly done. We often win by less than 3-5 points.)
Luxor (you raid a temple via card draw that lets you move explorers forward and gain objects and/or potential bonuses for end game, trying to get to the center for the final point award. Another game we usually are only a few points apart in.)
Potion Explosion (create chain reactions of marbles that you gain as ingredients for potions that give you abilities in game to manipulate the marbles along with points. Erica tends to clobber me but I love watching the marbles crash together LOL)

We like these as being good games designed for 2:

Patchwork (9x9 grid you fill with shapes ala Tetris, but limited in options each turn + you have to have funds/time to buy them, with each purchase forcing you closer to the end of your game)
Seven Wonders Duel (you get to pick 4 wonders to complete for bonuses, then use card selection paid by other cards you've selected to get resources, victory points, and science. Can win a number of ways. Based on the game 7 wonders, which I love but requires at least 3 and plays best with 5.

This last one isn't strictly for 2, but works well as a duel:

Letter Tycoon (combo of word building from letters you draw + buying patents on letters to score points when others use them)

We also like Kingdomino, which Chad mentioned. Goal is to create a grid (5x5 or 7x7 depending on the version) where you try to match as many dominoes of the same type as possible (water, forest, plains, desert, and cave) and gain bonuses by playing dominoes with crowns on them, which stack your points the more you have. Quick and easy and fun!

Aside from OOTP I play a lot of League of Legends and Crusader Kings III on the computer. I occasionally play Call of Duty with friends on PS5, but mostly just looking forward Madden and the new College Football game in 2024.
