Television

Post by Clayman » Tue May 18, 2021 6:42 am

I don't really watch much TV specially when it comes to the lighter longer days, usually outside until the sun goes down. Anyway when I was younger we only had 3 TV stations then it went to 4 then 5 and eventually cable and it's multitude of stations came along.

Like I say it used to be 3 channels now I have around 400 but you know what those 3 channels had better programmes than the 400 of today. All there seems to be is reality and quiz programmes, another thing that seems to be the flavour of the month is remakes of good sometimes great programmes that are remade and couldn't wipe the ass of the originals. No idea what it's like stateside but TV over here is garbage to what it used to be, maybe I'm getting to old for the world we live in.

I tend to watch nothing but sports. Very few other tv programs interest me these days either. My IPTV provider has a lot of films and TV series on demand and that fills most of my other viewing hours

I don't watch anything on tv. If there is a show that's out, I'll wait a few seasons and watch it on some demand streaming service. I've had HBOMax for about a year now. Spent the last 3 months completing all 8 seasons of GoT. It's the only show I watched and it still took me about 3 months.

I binge alot of the old stuff, Starsky and Hutch was one of the most recent ones. I'm on with Sharpe at the moment, British army in Napoleonic times.

I remember the good old days of 3 channels too and you are right, always seemed to find something to watch. I find that we mostly watch Netflix or Hulu more than regular TV. Of course I am old so that might be why too.

Just Completed a CSI Las Vegas rewatch, all 15 seasons.

Before that it was a M*A*S*H rewatch.

And Star Trek (as well as Next Gen) are always on the menu.

Other than that, not much out there for me.

Don't have much use for modern "TV".

It does seem a common theme that not many of us have any use for mainstream TV. Apart from the fact that the standards appear to have dropped to near zero, it's just too easy to watch streaming services these days rather than consult TV schedules and wait weeks for the series to unfold

:plus1: I’ve gotten used to watching shows when I want to. Seems weird now like you said to wait for the next episode. Streaming and being locked in for a year I think have changed how we watch TV forever.

Lots of TV is considerably better today than it was. But it is much more complex and often requires a lot more from its audience. Whereas shows once were done in 22 minutes, and were on every week at the exact same time. Now they are sprawling over many episodes and require you to access a specific platform. TV had great moments back in the day. M*A*S*H was awesome. Mary Tyler Moore. Columbo. All In the Family. Just add in a ton more shows--all on three channels. But today's great TV is all over the place, and to be honest the things that are great would often never have made it on TV back then because it is a lot more free-form and often challenges the regulations that standard network television is (even today) limited by.

The quality of story-telling can be much more advanced today. In years past, most shows were independent from one another, arks upon themselves, not requiring a viewer to watch the show in succession. With the advent of streaming services, shows have the ability to provide long story arks as people will binge watch from the beginning. This can be great. But I'll also admit, I love watching independent shows when I don't want to invest too much mental power into something. Give me a Bob's Burgers any day of the week. Crack a drink and sloth for 22 minutes.

I’ll watch Bob’s when I’m falling asleep. Always does the trick. Not a knock on the show, I think it’s great, but knocks me out.

I usually watch shows once they end because I don’t like to have a show get canceled once I start it. I liked the show APB but they canceled it after a season.

I’ve been binging Frasier recently. I also try to keep up with The Blacklist once the season ends, Mindhunters on Netflix, and I watch 2.5 Men a lot (I hate the Kutcher’s addition). The first 4 seasons were the best.
