Team Options Question

Post by Spiccoli » Sun Jan 20, 2019 4:11 pm

If I have a player with two years left on his contract and a team option ext season, if I release him, will the Team be responsible for his entire contract?

Or just the reminder of this season? Will the remaining two seasons be voided like of the Team Option is used?

I've been looking online and trying get a straight answer

FYI - The player I'm looking at Jessie Stewart. https://statsplus.net/brewster/player/24449#profile

He's owed $3.6 Million next season + $3.7M the year after that, but there's a Team Option with a $2 Million buyout.

When I clicked the "Release Player" the game warns that'll owe $5.8 million over the remaining part of contract. Not sure how it's coming up with that and it seems to be a mistake.

It's not the total remaining on the contract, which would be almost $9 Million ($1.8 M this season + $7.1M next two seasons).

I'm thinking it should be the remaining this season, which is about $1.8M + the $2M buyout. Or $3.8M

But looks like it's adding the buyout for the last season, which is also $2M. So... $5.8 Million total.

So Post-Export, I released Jessie Stewart. Andnext season's Misc Player's expenses went up by $2 Million. So that makes sense. Unfortunately, the game doesn't project 2 years out, so I don't know if the $2M will also be added for 2039.

Anyway. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well.. Ok.

I guess no one else knows the answer either?

I suppose I'll just have to take the plunge and find out on my own... lol

Sorry...I missed this. Stewart's contract is:

2037: $3.6M
2038: $3.7M ($2M buy-out)
2039: #3.9M ($2M buy-out)

I think it's saying that if you release him, you owe:

2037: $1.8M (remaining salary)
2038: $2M
2039: $2M

There is some question in my mind as to whether this works right in the last year of the deal, but I don't know for sure.

Yeah, from what I know, it'd be the TO's plus what's remaining. Declining the 1st TO in the offseason just makes you pay both buyouts in the years they are assigned to.

Based on past experience, if you drop a player during the season and he ends up getting released, I believe then you are on the hook for the Team Options. That happened to me in another unnamed league.

I should rephrase my first sentence. I mean TO's as in the buyouts, not the full salary.

Is that true? So if you have two separate Team Options for the last two years of a contract, then you'll owe both if you accept the first team option?

I honestly didn't know that. That's some great info!!!

And that also makes complete sense now with what I owe Jessie Stewart if I cut him now.

Sad to see such an ignoble end to Stewart's career. He has a special place in Phantoms lore since he was an extra piece in the Guzman trade acquisition and then a headliner in the Lacaze trade acquisition.

Completely agree.... for other reasons.

It's critical to have dependable starters who may not be #1 or #2, but are able to be just solid inning eaters who give your team a good chance to win every time you out. He's was a great #3 for several seasons. 200+IP's and ~4.00 ERA.

I don't want to cut him, but for the first time in Team History, TWC is up against the salary cap. And his ratings have taken a blood bath this season. He's lost 3 points on stuff and 2 on Movement. He was actually decent in the bullpen last season, but he's been getting shelled all this season, even at AAA. 32 Years Old seems a little young to completely lose it.

Maybe he'll head for the Middle East and have a resurrection.

The reality of that trade, since I was the one who made the trade, is that Jesse Howard was always the centerpiece of that trade. Stewart seemed like a solid addition and I was always hopeful that he would be a late bloomer. That was definitely a fun trade (Lacaze) as I took a lot of flack for it after I traded him for some "warty" prospects....ah, pretty fun trade to look back on!

You only owe the buyout on both years if you decline year 1. If you opt-in for year 1, then you still have the decision in year 2 to either opt-in again or pay him off. I think Ron had it right above.

So as an example, if you have 2 TO's each being $10M with a $2M buyout, then you'd pay him $4M total if you decline the 1st one because the 2nd one gets auto declined. If you accept the first one, you have him at $10M for that year, then you either pay him $10M for year 2 when option decision time comes or buy him out for the $2M. So you either owe him $4M total (decline year 1 which declines year 2), $12M total (decline year 2), or $20M total (no declines) over those 2 years.

Howard was the centerpiece, sure, but Stewart was more of a 1b than a 2 - in the league's climate at the time, Stewart had definite #2/3 potential (while Howard had #1 potential). That's why I called him 'a' headliner instead of 'the' headliner.

See there, I failed to notice "the" subtleties of your little post... :funny:
