Super Mega Baseball 2

Post by Spiccoli » Mon Feb 12, 2018 9:52 am

I used to play baseball games a lot, but started getting turned off of them as they got more "realistic". Hitting just wasn't as fun when it's almost impossible to tell if pitches were balls or strikes...

Anyway, I tried Super Mega Baseball on a whim. It's pretty bare bones, but I feel they nailed the gameplay. Hitting, Pitching & fielding is just fun in the game. You can fine tune the difficulty so you're not dominating, but you're not striking out constantly either.

Anyway, I guess the game was popular enough that they're making a sequel, due to come out this spring. They are fleshing the game out, allowing for more customization and improving the graphics.

They are also adding online features for online play. I'm hoping for online leagues, but that might be too time consuming. Who knows...

Anyway, the first one is a great pick up and play game, when you want to relax for 20-30 minutes and play a quick game. Don't let the cartoony graphics of the first one put you off, they did a great job on the gameplay mechanics, which is far more important than realistic player models.

I'm debating on getting the game on Steam vs the Xbox. I tend to do casual gaming on the Xbox, where I can lounge on the couch and veg out. But if there's actual interest here about getting it on Steam, I could get it there instead.

Anyway, just though I'd throw it out there. It's been long, long time since I found an arcade style baseball video game worth playing.

I love SMB! Very anxiously awaiting the release of the new one. I'm very into MLB The Show on PS4, but they are completely different experiences. I'll definitely be getting it, most likely on PS4.

I've considered getting a PS4 just to play MLB The Show and The Last of Us. I think I got Super Mega Baseball as part of the Games with Gold option on XBox One and I really like it for the same reasons Spiccoli listed. The sequel looks like it should be just as good if not better than the original.

I basically have my PS4 solely for The Show. Though I've also gotten into Rocket League, and it's where I found SMB.

I don't have a PS4, so I've missed out on The Show.

As much as I'd like to play it, can't seem to justify buying a PS4 for that purpose. Plus, I don't play the consoles much anymore. Mostly my kids do now.

FYI - I got into the Beta for this game.

Quick Notes
- Graphics are improved, but not a lot
- Gameplay is almost identical, which is fine. It's fun
- Pitchers have only have a few types of pitches, instead of access to the entire arsenal.

They just recently allowed access to the customization (Teams & Jerseys). It's not permanent and will be wiped out on final release, so I haven't dug into it much. However, some of the users on the Beta Forum (reddit) have posted some cool creations. Too many Cubs jerseys... no 80's Astros though, which is a shame.

The stuff I'm really interested in, Online play and custom leagues haven't been released yet, so I haven't got too much into it. Repeatedly playing exhibition games gets old quick. But I'm looking forward to the final release.

did you decide if you're doing it on pc or xbox? i guess the cross platform multiplayer is only pc-ps4 and pc-xbox, not ps4-xbox

Looks like Xbox for me. It's going to be free for Xbox Live Subscribers when it's released next week.

Grabbed this yesterday off Live. I have now spent 10+ hours playing Super Mega Baseball 2. It's a lot of fun. Don't know about staying power, but I'm enjoying it for now.

Yeah, that's how I feel about it.

It's great to just fool around with for awhile. The games are quick, so there isn't a huge time commitment. The Season mode is well done... and simple.
