What I have been working on...

Post by mrbornac » Wed Aug 24, 2016 10:14 am

So, where the hell has Bornac gone the past month? Why hasn't he been exporting religiously and maybe even making occasional sh!tposts? Great question.

As I explained to Recte when he reached out a week ago or so, I traveled for work - and don't play OOTP on a laptop, so I got out of the habit sadly. I should be better about OOTP, and the EBA, I promise I will try!

Now, what has me "busy". Well, if you have been in the MBBA long enough, you may remember a time when live sims via Google Hangouts were a thing. While I could not get my camera to work with hangouts back then, I was captivated by the idea of taking something like an OOTP sim and broadcasting it live to an audience of interested viewers. Little did I know that later twitch would become a thing, and it was not until recently that I saw the true power of "Twitch" style gaming for things other than consoles.

Randomly, a facebook friend of mine "liked" D&D by Wizards of the Coast. I did a headslap reminiscent of a V8 commercial and was like duh, I should like that too. I only used to play tabletop RPGs for YEARS AND YEARS from grade school through college and even into my late 20's and early 30's. Once I liked D&D on Facebook - the first thing I saw on the feed was a show on YouTube called "Dice, Camera, Action". I clicked the link, and the way I view D&D will forever be changed.

I watched hours and hours of a DM and 4 players, via remote video connections, play a D&D adventure.

Enter my life in 2016. I grew up in northern Wisconsin (Eau Claire to be specific), at age 16, moved to Sun Prairie (outside of Madison, WI), and then went on to college in Winona, MN. I then moved to Milwaukee for a year, then on to Las Vegas for 2, and then on to Chicago for 6. Then to Madison again for 7, and now, Winston-Salem, NC for the past 9 years. General story - I have moved around enough that I am no where near the people I used to game with. Be it in Grade School, High School, college, or even as an adult. I recently kicked around the idea of playing with any local folks I might know, and I could never find 4 guys/gals who I thought would be as committed to it as I wanted them to be. So instead, I went back to Facebook. I took 6 of my facebook friends, who ironically, did not know each other. And I floated this idea to them, since I knew they were all D&D capable dudes. And now 4 of them have agreed.

Last night was the first night where I got the 5 of us together, now, on group skype video chat, and did introductions of people and their characters. Starting next Tuesday night, the adventure will begin. I would love the idea to stream this on Twitch so that the world can watch and participate, but my technical skills are not there to make it happen today.

So, If any of you guys are interested in either being guest characters for the adventure, or have any interest to do this if I do a second night out of the week, I am game for it. Does it sound fun to you? If so, let me know.

If you want, I can give you a subforum here for that. And for any other groups we might want to start, for that matter.

Thanks Matt. Let's see what kind of traction this gets - and if anyone is interested in doing something like this.

Damn this sounds awesome. My time commitments are out of whack right now though. I travel about 10-12 days a month for work or pleasure. If things start settling down I'd be up for this.

Sounds very interesting. But I work over 50 hours every week so scheduling anything on a weekday is pretty much out.

I'd be interested, but I don't have a work schedule that lets me commit to a particular night. If you do get something going thats stable, I might chip in here and there. I'm playing with some friends in town right now, and we're having enough trouble getting together once a month.

I might be willing to do a couple hours on a weekend day if that would make sense for people. I know schedules can be a bear. But at least with this D&D game you don't have to drive to someones house, or worry that the guys who come over will pee on the toilet seat.

Not yet, I have looked into Roll20, but I want to try it as a user before trying to ref with it.

I figure the fact that these are guys I know, along with the fact that we get to see faces, mean that I trust the die rolls they say they get.... 8)

This Tuesday will be our parties 10th session - it's going pretty strong - about every 3rd session someone can't make it, but for the most part, we have been a full group each time. I am looking more seriously now at adding a second, either weekly or bi-weekly group on MAYBE Thursday night. So if anyone is thinking that this sounds like fun, now is the time to speak up.

I know nothing about D&D but wanted to jump in here because you mentioned Winona, MN. My company, Cytec (formerly Fiberite) has a location there and I worked there a lot last year.

Winona is an awesome and beautiful city in my opinion. I would love to go back there some summer and spend some time. Winter on the river can be something else as well.

It's great! I was able to sample all of the seasons... Winter was a shock for me being a CA native, but I love the city. My only complaint is A lack of good food options... Haha.

I just started a forum-based game about a week ago and am having a blast. I'm too much of a newb to DM, but if someone else were willing to do the honors I'd gladly join the party. Don't have the night hours to commit to formal meet-ups, though.

Here is a link to the sub-forum where we're playing if you want to watch: http://thefibb.net/forums/index.php?board=104.0

The OOC thread is talking about party strategy, etc. and the IC thread is for official DM and player interactions. We posted bios as well and I think they are trying to share char sheets there, too, but we've all emailed them to the DM regardless.

Social stuff has gone really smoothly thus far as generally the "face" of the party (me) and the DM both are really active. Combat slows a bit sometimes, though, because we have to wait for everyone to check in for init rolls and such, but it hasn't been too bad yet as everyone checks in pretty regularly - and the DM has been pretty good about letting things flow (ie. if 3 players have init before the next mob, he doesn't hold strictly to going in init order).
