Recommend Music Thread.

Post by ryankcollins » Tue Feb 15, 2011 11:49 am

Matt and I were talking about bands that we enjoy the other day and found that some of the stuff both of us like are the same. So I figured I would start a thread so people can recommend music to others and maybe find some new stuff for people:

Arcade Fire (if you watched the Grammy's...they won album of the year for "The Suburbs." The album is great but their earlier stuff is great as well).

The National (one of my favorite bands to chill with a Crown and Coke and listen to)

Mastodon (slightly heavy stuff with awesome lyrics to read. This band rules)

If you dig Mastodon, you need to check into the whole Savannah scene down there, particularly Kylesa and Baroness. High on Fire might also interest you.

Back closer to the topic I'm currently on a huge Band of Horses kick, especially their first two albums with the new one being pretty average. The Shins are excellent and of course my all-time favorite My Morning Jacket, currently working on their new album.

Baroness! Love them. Honestly...I've never been a fan of Matt Pike.

EDIT: Also, Kylesa puts on a great show. I booked them for a birthday show a while back when they came out with "To Walk A Middle Course" and they were awesome.

Got any more bands like that? Shoot them off because you know what I like now. Haha.

The Sword, Torche, Grand Magus? All have more of that stoner metal vibe to them. If you like a progressive bent to your heaviness I have been really in the new Orphaned Land and Ihsahn of Emperor fame. I am also a big Isis fan and recently discovered a band called Burst that are incredible, but like Isis just broke up

I know that most of us probably gravitate toward classic or modern rock (as do I)...

But if you have even a passing interest in latino/world music, check out Ozomatli. They have been around for a while, originating from LA and incorporating a variety of styles from hip hop in their early work, to salsa, merengue, funk, and transitioning to a more modern pop sound on their later work.

If you want to hear something different while still having catchy hooks and good beats, check em out!

Ditto on Latino/WOrld. I'll listen to some Beledo at times - my brother has played in his band in Uruguay.

Including Panda Bear? Not a huge fan, I bought Strawberry Jam a couple of years back based on the hype but just couldn't get into it.

They are usually hit or miss. While Strawberry Jam is one of my "least" favorites by them (though I still like it), their latest Merriweather Post Pavilion is awesome!

My loves: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Matchbox Twenty, Lifehouse, John Mayer, Radiohead, Oasis, Boston, Rush, etc. So I'm stuck in the 90's, sue me.

But...I do explore all genres of music and love everything from country to classic rock to blues to jazz, to classical, to electronica, to some pop....and my guilty pleasure is late 1970's soft rock. Mmmm, that's good.

I really, really dig Arcade Fire.

You have one of hte most eclectic tastes of music of anyone I've ever met, and I mean that as a compliment. I'm slow to adapt and catch on to stuff.

Here Here! I've recently been listening to my Beatles catalogue again... And I think that side 1 of the White Album may be among the best they ever recorded.

I'm also a huge fan of R.E.M. They got soft earlier in this decade, but Accelerate was awesome and their classic stuff still blows away anything from the 80's.

Guilty pleasure? Heart. Both their late 70's rockers and the 80's power ballads. Love Ann Wilson's voice.
