Shame, shame!!

In all seriousness Chad before a guy hits 5 years service time you can only do 3 year extensions.

I was almost going to do that with a player in my first year here...then when I wrote a TN about the negotiations, some folks gently let me know I was...um...not allowed to do that.

Lesson: The benefits of TN go far beyond 2 points.

The funny thing is I knew about the rule when signing Ata to an extension...I think I just got a little trigger happy and let it slip my mind when I saw how little he wanted lol.

A-Rod still has this extension in game. How will this be handled?

Extension will be voided, maybe not until after the Landis though.

I'm fine with this being illegal since it is within our current rules, but can the GB review that rule and potentially change it? That extension seems reasonable and some of my guys want similar extensions that I also see as reasonable. I think the extension asks by players after year 2 or 3 have become much more realistic.

Only downside is weaker free agency so if that is the reason we haven't changed it yet, than I get it.

I agree with Brandon. That is a reasonable contract extension.

I have long advocated for the abolition of that rule in various private chats, but maybe not publicly.

Another key thing is that it would shift when guys hit FA. You might see a lot more in their late 20s after already getting a big deal.

That's what I mean by weaker free agency. That is the only downside at this point.

I would argue it would be better because right now you don't see too many superstars getting to FA with any prime years left. There are a lot of GMs who would be wary of giving 5+ years to a guy who is in the 28-29 range, but he could still have some good years left for FA. Right now it consists mostly of mid range 26 year olds and guys who can produce at 32-33 who have a giant ticking clock on them.
