With the 2054 Amateur Draft soon approaching ... what's your opinion on rolling your first round pick?

Glad only round 1 gets comp picks for unsigned draft picks. Draft with budget in mind and sign the kid. Improve your minors.

Given the fact that all the GB members have voted for the bottom option, is this a rule change we should expect to see on the horizon?

I generally feel that just signing your picks should be everyone's default option. However, the rules allow us to roll the pick for a year if we have to or choose to so I've done it and won't complain when people choose that path.

The main opposition I would have to getting rid of the rollover picks is that we have guys who are impossible to sign and you can't see signability on the HTML pages. I don't always have game access when drafting or building my list and it would suck to get stuck with a guy who won't sign because I didn't have all the info I needed. If we could turn off the impossible rating, I would be fine with the rollovers going away or being repositioned to between R1 and R2.

Not all of them Fred. Some people equate it to tanking and get worked-up if you do this on purpose. I think its just another tactic that there is no rule against, at least not yet.

To me it's just personal preference. I just take what I can get. Does that make me a slut?

No i don't have any plans to propose a rule change.

I think most of the time it's a poor strategic move, but it's perfectly valid if someone wants to do it.

Also as Fred mentioned we do need to allow for compensation when a team makes an effort to sign a player but is unsuccessful.

I think it's a strategy with a ton of risk and I don't think I've done it more than once in online play. You're basically gambling that you're getting a better pick the following year.

Because players can refuse to sign I would personally strongly oppose removing the option.

I drafted Mike Brodt in 2044. Gave him one kinda decent offer than I decided I really didnt want him so didnt make another offer after that. (And Brodt is one of my custom ammys.)

The following year I drafted Tom Turner and then C Todd Tatlock as my Compensation pick for not signing Brodt.

Knowing what I know now, it was a great move that totally paid off.

Good conversation. I for one like the way the rules are implemented in the BBA: you can roll the pick to next year but then that pick in next year's draft becomes a use-it-or-lose-it, and rolling after the first round isn't allowed. I think it's an important to have the financial relief available if you feel you want it. And in a year where we could theoretically have a very weak draft with many top prospects asking for too much money, it's nice to have the option to defer the pick until next year.

As long as it’s first round only, I don’t care if people do it every year. But a first round pick is too important to get wrong.

I have no issue with it either. Thats a roll of the dice you’d need to make as a GM. A bird in the hand worth two in the bush?

It's a perfectly valid strategy. I view it not so much as a financial thing, but more about getting top value for your picks. If your turn comes up and the top guys on the board are not really want you want, or at positions you don't need, then roll it. It helps that you can view future years' draft classes and already start strategizing for next year.

Funny/somewhat relevant story: I rolled Adrián Fox after drafting him 8th overall in 2051, not because I didn't want him, but because I felt '51 was a very weak draft class, and he wasn't worth an 8th overall pick. I ended up drafting him again in '52 at 14th overall (not my comp pick, but my actual pick that round — which technically meant I could've rolled him again), which was a more appropriate place for a player of his talent level.

I believe Ron did a study on this at one point and talked about how it rarely (if ever) worked because of the value of prospects in your system etc. Despite his study...I still do it on occassion depending on when my pick comes around. If I pick at the end of round 1, I am more likely to "roll the pick" than towards the beginning of the round because I am not moving "back" as far at that point.
