VOTE: Helmut Grun signing
I was really torn on this signing. I made it right before the sim in a bout of FOMO. My payroll should be ok for the first two front loaded years, but might have to move a guy or two. Anyway, he will be a great value starting year 3 IMO when he is entering his age 28 season. I hope front loading this will allow me to extend some of my other young stars. Oh yeah. And either him or Bishr are gonna have to play 2B, which is scary.

Helmut was very popular in Buenos Aires. I think you made that offer because deep down you know he will deliver. I am glad he is in the Heartland. It is his destiny.

Makes sense why you went for him. Won't be the first GM to go after one of the GBC studs and won't be the last.

He is ranked as the #15 hitter in the BBA. Stats won't be as good as GBC, but still rock solid player.

I'm a Nakomoto guy - but both are lifted by playing a good 2B - but both are the best mid-20s free agents on the market. What else but loadsamoney should they cost?

Re: VOTE: Helmut Grun signing
The one thing I would argue... And it's a tough argument because of which came first and you didn't know you'd get Helmut. Maybe you should have let Frost walk.
He's still a great player on paper. But he has already lumped a point of contact and both his offensive and defensive numbers declined last season. I think he probably bounces back to be a 3-4.5 WAR player next year but he is becoming a risky situation.
Grun could have replaced him as a franchise player and then you could have used Frost's 14-17 million to spread around where need be. There are a ton of 3B options out there that could get you 2-3 WAR, if that is Frost's new norm.

Re: VOTE: Helmut Grun signing
I thought he might go for more given his age and profile and I decided I didn't want to be part of a potential bidding war in the upper 20's/lower 30's. He didn't end up getting that expensive. I'm sure your fan interest got a serious boost from the signing. I think his hitting (he seems strong vs RHP for a righty) will transition to the BBA.

Please add a third option to the poll: "I hate you."
Seriously, never regret going for it even if the move is a bust.

There’s no reason Frost shouldn’t recover. I have to take last season as a fluke. He got a loyalty deal, though, for sure.ae37jr wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 5:37 amThe one thing I would argue... Re: VOTE: Helmut Grun signing
If you’re referring to Yoshikawa, I considered him because he’s got a little bit better defense at 2B, but not nearly enough to make up for Grun’s bat, which has been more consistent.
I was hoping I lost out on him to someone who paid him $20m annually, but I think I’m ok with this.

This sounds like a good future feature….”Where are they now”. A BBA 30 for 30 podcast on the UMEBA contraction FA signings that one year….

This one looks a little scarier now. Already lumped a point of contact and power. Still should be better than he is playing though.

Yep. Results have not been pretty. Was not paying for a .324 OBP. Hope things pick up a little and he finishes near .400 OBP.

Re: VOTE: Helmut Grun signing
This has been Grun's best season to date, regarding WAR. He's slugging a little more this season, in what I assume is his walk year, given he has an option for $11M. However, I wish he OBP skills were a little better. Only .355 OBP this season, which is just a point better than last season. In retrospect, I'm not sure I'd make this deal again, given I could have used that money elsewhere instead of another 1B/DH type. He's actually played alright at 2B this season, but really hurt me early on his his contract when playing 2B.

Re: VOTE: Helmut Grun signing
I thought his OBP would be a little higher also.
That's the tricky part about signing GBC guys. Is his 8 eye almost a 9, a true 8, or almost 7? It's hard to gauge when they are facing lesser competition.
