Starter Conversion: Best Pitch to Add??

Post by jiminyhopkins » Sat Jan 22, 2022 12:45 pm

Jeffrey Flowers is a 17 year old reliever who already throws almost 100mph. The Talons are looking to make him their first ever Starter Conversion. Flowers throws a cutter and slider. Should we tell him to add a curveball? A changeup? A fastball or even a knuckleball? He has a good work ethic and plenty of time to develop the pitch.

(I remember an article a while back about the relative strengths of the pitches but I can't find it)

Fastball, cutter, forkball. Any fastball variant. Anything else will just be crap.

I'm just worried that a 1 or 2 rated fastball would be worse than no fastball at all...

The point is that it won't be a 1 or 2 rated fastball because of his velocity. It'll be a 5 or 6 or better. You add anything else and it's gonna be crap.

Create a league in commissioner mode and make a player a close as possible to this guy. Then follow the conversion steps trying different pitches.

If you add a non fastball pitch you're basically hoping that you get lucky and the talent bumps. I don't know about you but I wouldn't bet much on that happening with any particular player.

I'd probably add a fastball or sinker. Lane is right. Those tend to be average pitches at least. I did a knuckler for fun once and it was like a 1 actual rating with 3 potential. So definitely don't do that.

So I did this and tried out a few things. Then I got bored so now Jeffrey Flowers is a starting pitcher with a 22 stuff rating who ended last season on a streak of 12 straight no-hitters.

Must have been scheduled 12 times in a row against the Talons.

Definitely. If he'd have faced Toledo, the Liberty would have crushed him.
