Starter Prospect Preference

Post by shoeless.db » Tue Sep 28, 2021 12:49 pm

A brief discussion on Discord between Lane and myself has me curious about what GMs value when it comes to pitchers. Below are four minor league starters with somewhat different profiles, ages, and handedness. If you could only have one, which would you prefer and why?

I like Ralph.

Bennett is 25 and so he's developed and likely isn't going to be anything more than a minor league filler.

Yamasaki has movement issues along with only 2 "good" pitches which leads me to think he is likely better as a bullpen option, but not with 5 movement.

Hebert is a young lefty who might bump, but is probably not important to me unless he bumps significantly.

If I had to order them, I would order them.

1. Ralph

2/3 Hebert & Bennett(these guys look the same to me)

4. Yamasaki

probably sanders. i can overlook the movement with that stuff, and he has rp convert potential.

hebert is still garbage due to being a clubhouse cancer and overall lack of baseball talent

Sanders for much the same reason that Niles laid out, he's got more runway to develop into a better arm. Hebert's intangibles are just ... yikes.

I’m more of a stats over ratings guy, and Bennett’s success in AAA at a young age gave him the edge for me.

Tom Bennett - at 8/7/6 and 25 yo, Bennett would probably be released in the YS9 organization as it stands today.

Ralph Sanders - at 10/5/6 and 21 yo, Sanders would be a very low level contributor at A-ball and a candidate for demotion of DFA.

Ichizo Yamasaki - at 8/5/7, and 23, Yamasaki would probably hae to be released in the YS9 organization.

Dave Herbert - at 8/7/5/ and 17 years old, Herbert would be a bona fide #2 or #3 in my rookie ball team. That said, he wouldn't be in my real plan so much as an iron I leave in the fire to see what happens.

This may be the least humble brag I've ever seen from Ron. I like it.
